http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/06/30/bronx-lebanon-hospital-shooting/ A Mass shooting at a New York area Hospital is going wall to wall on the Local New York TV stations.
I remember two times i was watching NBC and a historic event happened.
the 9/11 attacks for sure, because the library had The Today Show on.
the other one was Baby Jessica; i was watching Rags to Riches(it was one of my favorite shows at that time) and they interrupted the show for that. I'm still mad at NBC News for that. They did the same thing with the last episode of Sale of the Century too! Then they did the same thing during the Classic Concentration tournament of champions final too.
Going way way back, my grandmom was listening to the radio when John Daly(the same guy that did Whats My Line?) broke in to report that FDR had died. It would have been on CBS i think.
Talking about NASA...The 1986 Challenger and 2003 Columbia disasters come to mind. I guess I was always just fascinated by space travel as a kid and I remember seeing the Challeneger explosion that morning on TV. Very sad.
Or even Hurricane Katrina in 2005. We had days of coverage on that.
How did TV cover the suicide of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington's ??? The reason I asked is that our local radio stations and I assumed our TV ( though I do not watch them ) had crisis counselors standing by "just in case". I know on Facebook there were a lot of those "he spoke for me..now he is gone...I have no reason to live" crap. The reason I say "crap" is that many of these people have been posting for years and years and not once did they ever mentioned Chester Bennington or Linkin Park until now.
Umm Wow that's a few days ago and this person mentioned in your post was never mentioned on the evening news. The coverage went to OJ Simpson Parole hearing and Trump/Putin Scandal. Well Linkin Park was big in Some parts of the country just not where I live though.
Apparently they are big in Colorado. I live within a few blocks of Crawford Media's 560 KLZ/Legends 810 and Max Media's Jammin 101.5 and FLO 107 plus Salem Media has offices nearby too and ALL of them had counselors on call at the station even though none of those stations played Linkin Park.
Well in California I look at Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles TV feeds on the day of one of the Linkin Park member death I got yes the Trump Scandal, The OJ Simpson parole hearing and wildfires near Yosemite as my top headlines. Probably we had to look at certain celeb sites like TMZ in other links though.
Well that is what you should be getting...NEWS !!!! A guy in a somewhat popular rock band with issues, severe issues deciding to hang himself sorry that's not news, The more I think of it celebrity deaths should only be reported by TMZ and the taboilds rather that CBS, NBC, FOX News, ABC or even CNN. Way too many people today can NOT handle celebrity deaths !! I know people who still can not get back to work because of the death of Carrie Fisher and that was late last year !!![/QUOTE]
I know we're now in a gossip 'infotainment' world, but I disagree. I don't even know Linkin Park's music, but the death of a major musician and/or celebrity IS news, and should at least be noted. I'm not saying they should spend a large amount of time on it, but it does qualify as news. Would you have not reported the death of John Lennon? Greg Allman? From what I've heard, his (can't even remember his name) suicide had something to do with prior or current substance abuse and depression. That's a very pertinent subject given the levels of heroin and opiate addiction now plaguing the nation.
I'd say anybody who is still off work because they were upset about Carrie Fisher's death, has some serious emotional problems, and Fisher is the least of it. Broadcasters have more important things to worry about than avoiding stories that might upset people. I'm upset about Trump, but I don't think news about Trump should stop to make me feel better.

I understand what you are saying. About Carrie Fisher I know two guys who live in Portland, OR. One works at Fedex and his husband was a teacher at some university. They are both HUGE Star Wars fans. Always quoting stuff from the movie. When Carrie Fisher died both of them were beyond shocked to the point of being devastated. Since her death the Fedex guy took a leave from his job and the other guy quit his teaching gig. They spend their days in their apartment watching Star Wars over and over and living off of money from a gofundme account. Yeah talk about emotional problems.
I question the priorities of the major networks (the "big three") with regard to breaking into normal programming to cover O.J. Simpson. There are enough cable news channels, and enough websites streaming the coverage, that breaking into normal everyday network programming should have been unnecessary.Well in California I look at Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles TV feeds on the day of one of the Linkin Park member death I got yes the Trump Scandal, The OJ Simpson parole hearing and wildfires near Yosemite as my top headlines. That said, here in Nashville, it was noon when the "breaking news" of O.J. happened, and channel 4 incorporated it into their normal noon newscast. However, they in turn, broke into NBC news' network coverage to cover the verdicts in the Timothy Batts trial. (Not newsworthy nationwide, but certainly newsworthy here.) However, at 12:30, following the conclusion of the local news, they returned to NBC coverage of O.J.
Regarding the reporting of rock star deaths, Lennon's death is in a special category--not only because he was a Beatle, but the fact that he was murdered, as opposed to just OD-ing or otherwise killing himself. As far as the two Star Wars fans/clowns, they should REALLY consider getting some serious help.
Thats the thing about rock star deaths. It's always about OD'ing or AIDS even if a celebrity died from something else. David Bowie for example a lot of people believe died from AIDS even though he died from cancer. It's a lot like those so-called child stars, It's always suicide and a statement from Paul Petersen ( Donna Reed & A Minor Consideration ) saying whatever. Leslie Gore had cancer I believe but many of those out these believe the woman killed herself because her "singing days" is in the toilet, I was working the night Rusty Hamer from "Make Room for Daddy" killed himself. Before the internet they didn't show recent pics of those child stars. 15 years after his death I stumbled online a pic of a man in torn blue jeans , very overweight, bald head, ZZ Top style beard and a cigar in his mouth. Found out THAT was Rusty Hamer !!!
