What Will 93.3 in Huntsville??

I've been wondering the same thing. I've heard rumors but nothing definite. I know the split is comming soon tho. I just hope it's something worth listening to. I noticed on their website the logo has been changed and 93.3 has been removed from it but the tab still says WHRP 93.3. I think they are preparing to move 93.3 to its new CP on Drake mountain too. I noticed a new tower up right next to one of the old ones up there a couple of days ago. I wonder if that will be theirs as well. Anyone have any info on that?

I have heard 4 different formats! I know they are moving 93.3 to 94.1 because the Legal ID just says 94.1 now! I think if they are smart they go country! Every other format is packed!

3 AC's- 4 if you count WZYP as a Hot AC. 5 if you count 101.1 in Birmingham

2 Rock WTAK and WRTT

3 Urbans

And the only open formats are Top 40 and Country!

Cumulus won't put up a signal to compete with WZYP or HRP (Rock Urban or Top 40 would compete with there own stations) So it is a no-brainer to go country!

Yea but I also heard they are in some sort of agreement with clear channel from the 94.1/92.5 deal when they bought those station, that originally 93.3 was going to be on clear channels tower, which is WDRMs tower, which is country. So they wouldn't go with country if they were using another company's tower that houses a country station of their own. But if that new tower up there on Drake mountain is cumulus' tower, then they would be free to go with country on their own tower. The question is, does that new tower belong to cumulus or not? I don't know but I am assuming it does since nothing else is moving to that site that I know of but 93.3. Plus, 93.3 has been country twice before in the past. Neither time did they even get close to denting WDRM's numbers. Is the third time the charm? Is it even worth the money to find out? The rumor I heard was that WZYP wound transition to Hot A/C full time (instead of just mid-days), and they were going to go with rhythmic on 93.3. That would be very interesting. Any other format possibility thoughts anyone?

One of the rumors I heard was actually a possibility of an alternative format as well. It may not be that far fetched, but I don't think that would be the best choice.

I noticed 93.3 was off air this morning around 6am and a country station from somewhere was coming in. Have they made the tower move yet?

I don't think so. They are still IDing as Tullahoma at the top of the hour. Maybe you caught them in between tests of the new transmitter site possibly? Or maybe it was just a technical problem.

I don't know how you could say that country is an open format in the Huntsville area. I was scanning through the dial the other day and located 5 country stations that came in clear as a bell (96.1, 97.3, 102.1, 105.1 and 105.7). There were even a couple of others that came in with a little static. I think a modern rock/alternative station would fill a void in the Huntsville area, and would be a refreshing change. I just hope it won't be another AC, classic hits, or country station. The area is just saturated with those formats.

As much as I would like to have a full-on alternative rock station here in the Huntsville market to listen to, I don't see it happening. Sure it would be a fresh change, but I think that ship has sailed. The perfect time to create a new alternative station would have be when The X lost it's northern Alabama coverage two and half years ago and then the new station could have capture most of their displace audience. I'm pretty sure that audience is gone now.

I see two scenarios. 1. Go Country, and cut up Clear Channel's lead in the market, and their ability to set cost per point. 2. Go younger end Urban, and wrap up the market with two Urbans serving 19% of the population. Alternative is probably out of the question (Look what's happening to 99X in Atlanta). The artistic merits of a format don't mean anything to these guys. We should know that by now.
