What Will Be The Next Trend In CHR Radio?

So now that Rhythmic Heavy CHR/Pop stations, like 102.7 KIIS-FM Los Angeles, 104.7 Kiss FM Phoenix, and Channel 955 Detroit, are opening up again to playing more non Rhythmic hits, what do you think might be some of the next big trends we'll see across the country on CHR radio?
Will we be seeing more markets with 2 or more Mainstream CHRs? Will more CHRs go more Adult, or on the flipside go a bit more youth-leaning Mainstream CHR? Will upbeat and slow R&B hits fair well across the country on CHR? Teen Pop? Hip Hop? Rock? Modern AC? Dance? More current-based CHRs, or more conservative Recurrent friendly CHRs (like XL 106.7 Orlando)?

Some of the straight up mainstream CHR's have been adding some country hits recently... as a result the record comps are pushing them more. Tim McGraw... Keith Urban getting lots of play.
______________

I think "You'll Think Of Me" by Keith Urban has had an interesting run. It was released in October 2002. Hit country radio around late 2003/early 2004. AC/Soft AC in the summer/fall of 2004. Took a break. Then showed up on Hot AC in the spring/summer of this year. Now its starting on CHR 3 years after it was released.

Wow I didn't realize the lengthy histroy of this record. Kinda cool to see the way some CHRs have found tremendous success with this record, like Kiss in Charlotte, or The River in Nashville.
"You'll Think of Me" reminds me a bit of the Matchbox 20 sound, so I can see how it would fit on CHR radio.

IMO, it needs more airplay. I love that song, and I DESPISE country music. I don't think it's given a fair shot. Oh, but we can't play that artist because they're not pop. Umm, anyone playing Kanye West? Papa Roach?

The version the Hot AC, AC and CHR stations isn't even the original. Its a pop radio mix. And Keith Urban does a good job at sounding country, considering he is Australian.
______________

I find it funny that CHR is treating Papa Roach's Scars as a track released this summer when it was actually released to Rock radio in the fall of 2004 as the follow up to Getting Away with Murder as the 2nd single off the Getting Away with Murder CD.

Go fix yourself is another way of saying "I'm leaving you until you change the way you treat me." How they cut that out is amazing.

Question

I do not have a job in radio..but was just wondering why the majority of CHR stations will play a song and why others won't think of touching it. And some stations announce music as being new music when it isn't new at all..For example."You and Me" by Lifehouse. This song has been on CHR for months and months. But CHR station 106.1 KISS FM announced it as being new music just 2 weeks ago. So if other CHR stations think it is OK to play it..why are some just slow to pick it up...or not even touch it. I just know KISS here in Dallas won't even think about spinning Keith Urban..even though it is a great song

Its their rhythmic lean. They don't play rock songs until they enter the top 10.

I can pick up 2 CHR stations here.

103.5 KISS FM Chicago (WKSC) Rhythmic Leaning but mainstreamn
103.7 KISS FM Milwaukee (WXSS) almost all rhythmic like KHKS

WKSC has been playing Click Five - Just The Girl for months. WXSS just added it calling it "Brand New"

WLUM in Milwaukee (Alternative) has a liner saying "Other stations trick you into beliving songs are new. Here at 102-1, we play NEW MUSIC NOW" (Or something like that) followed by a song that WLUM has been playing since April that WXSS just started playing.

It mostly depends on your target audience of when a song gets played.

Re: Question

Exactly. Plus, most people don't care if you say "new" when another station has been playing it for a few months. It's still newer than most. And no 2 stations have 100% cross cume.

You WILL get in trouble with your country crowd if you say the Keith Urban
song is new on a CHR station. They'll laugh. That would be worse than if a Country station added Nelly/Tim right now and said "Over and Over" was brand new.

It doesnt bother me one bit that country songs are finding their way onto CHR. I think CHR needs to open their playlists a little bit but that is entirely another kind of war. I hope the next trend see's CHR's adding artits that are hot for younger demos that dont get much radio play. Examples My Chemical Romance, Motion City Soundtrack, All American Rejects, and etc. I could see some CHR's going for a Jack type of format but playing all of the hot tracks from all the main formats.
