What will become of WWRR 104.9 FM

Will they stay the course of the Hot AC or change to Oldies?

How about a Pure Rock format?

Why pick WWRR?

If they change to Oldies; does that mean WICK 1400 / WYCK 1340 will change?

If they did change to Oldies; then, WICK / WYCK should go to Adult Standards. However, I would strongly suggest the ABC Memories format instead of Westwood One's format. Broader playlist and better personalities.

Will Commissioner Bob Cordaro take his WITK 1550 back and do something or just let the station keep riding the coattails of WICK / WYCK?

I am interested to find out your opinions here on the site.

1550 split from WICK a while back. It's now broadcasting religion.

It's possible the WWRR calls stand for nothing, just a generic set of letters, anything that's NOT WWDL.

The Duke has said in the past that older demos have a lit of disposeable income, but it's been disputed elsewhere. He's a great guy, and he knows what he's doing. I wonder if another oldies or adult standards format will work. WNAK seems to have filled that niche rather nicely. The 104.9 sounds pretty good these days, but I don't know if this market can support another hot AC. I'm rather fond of WICK, but it's never pulled respectable numbers with that oldies format.

As others have said, RR may mean nothing.

But what about Real Radio? That would imply a more "in-your-face" format or presentation.

Or, maybe even FM talk (Real Radio is used as a slogan by some FM talkers).

FM TALK would be an intriguing proposition. We all know by
his posts the affinity Bob V. has for community based radio.
The thing that might doom it though would be the lack of
available talent in the area to sustain the format for any
length of time. Plus there would have to be syndication of
a sort and we all know the road that can lead to.
A rock format flies in the face of the durable 107 franchise.
Maybe the selection of the calls have to do with the "hard
sounding letter" concept. You pick letters that sound hard,
"K R Z", "W W R R". We shall see.

I can't see FM talk working in this market. WILK has the decent syndicated stuff locked up. Who wants to fill the schedule with second tier talk shows? As for local talk, have you heard WILK lately? It's the same five people calling in all the time. If I had to bet, I don't think "RR" really means anything. It was anything but "DL."

While it would be nice to hear some competition for WEZX, again, I can't see that happening. WEZX has a loyal audience. It's part of the NEPA culture. A challenger faces the fate of being an also-ran. But then, being al also-ran is better whan the miniscule numbers DL has now.

While all of the above is true, one must take into consideration that all of the competition WEZX has ever had in the last decade or so was never around for an entire yearly arbitron book. I could be wrong on this, and if so, they was not a whole lot longer then this. Competition in the past lacked in the following order:

#1.) - Uniqueness A playlist that was an EXACT dulpicate of 107 and never chose to "mix things up". If you play exactly what your competition has, of course everyone will listen to the station that's been around forever! (107)

#2.) - Talent. Stations competing in the past have not taken the time to find the RIGHT talent for the classic rock format that not only would hurt 107, but jocks that the NEPA and surrounding areas could relate to and grow to like.

#3.) - $$$ - The competition never really cared to spend any money, and it showed. To quote an old saying " you get what you pay for". Where are these stations today? Probablly some station in Maine is using the countless recycled call letters!

#4.) - Advertising. 95.7 z-talk? 97.9 Hard Rock, 97.9 The Mountain, 98 Rock, yada, yada, yada. I never saw any advertising and promotions for these stations of yesteryear. I'm sure i left a ton off this list. I just took the more recent ones.

Rock 107 is good, VERY good. Consistency is key. Good promotions. Good sound. Good air talent - That ='s revenue. No wonder why their the only classic rockers in town! The competition in the past simply did not grasp this concept.

They can't have ABC Memories because WAZL in Hazleton owns that franchise for the WB-Scranton market.

Bob Cordaro took the WICK programming off WITK / 1550 several months ago. He is now leasing the station to Holy Family Communications, a Roman Catholic religious group. WITK now simulcasts WQOR / 750 from Olyphant, running Catholic religious programming.
