What will Cumulus do with Citadel Media? ( WEDSDAY )

Tom Taylor addressed this the other day.

Cumulus says that they've found "$51.9 million of identified synergies". That's about $51.9 million in payroll that they intend to cut. That's about 860 jobs that pay $45K + bennies. And how many of their small market guys are making $45K?

This ain't gonna be pretty. Citadel Media will get plugged into dayparts that are now live on many Citadel stations. Most stations will be lucky to hang onto live drive-time shifts. Forget about live mid-days or evenings in most markets.

As Tom Taylor says, the "underperforming Citadel Network [syndicator Citadel Media] is expected to benefit greatly from a larger platform and Cumulus content assets." (There are already worries at the station level of more out-of-market programming pushed to local stations.)

I'm pretty sure that their competition is looking forward to meeting that "challenge".

I hope they don't change WLS-FM, which just had it's highest ratings, but from everything I hear about Cumulus we can expect the worst.

What worries me is that Cumulus is used to running medium market stations, not large market stations. I've already heard that Cumulus plans to blow up 94.7. The format of choice would likely be mainstream or adult CHR. Why change something that's already working though? I think it's an ego issue more than an issue of which format can make more money. With Jan Jeffries at the controls, he most likely wants to regenerate the competition he fueled (and lost) between B-96 and WLS-FM some 25 years ago. So, here's an idea. Keep WLS-FM in it's current form and fuel the competition between K-HITS and 94.7 in it's present form.

They would be stupid if they blew up WLS FM. I can also tell you that they will go all syndicated talk on WLS AM and get rid of all big salaries. They run stations here in Northwest Arkansas and they are awful. That includes the formats they have. The heritage that both WLS's have will be gone.

They indeed would be very stupid if they change WLS-FM. When is Don & Roma's contract on the AM up? Didn't Roe Conn recently sign an extension?

WLS-FM was Citadel Media 24/7 (Scott Shannon's True Oldies) when it launched, back when both were owned by ABC. If the syndicated program hadn't done reasonably well in its first few books, you never would have seen the station become what it is now.

I know this might sound a little crazy, but if you wanna hear what Cumulus sounds like just take a drive about 90 miles northwest of Chicago (Rockford) and then it will all make sense... We have 4 stations that are owned by The Cloud Company. 97ZOK sounds just like any other Cumulus CHR. We have Q98.5 which sounds just like every other Cumulus country station... As for the other two Cumulus stations we have a Classic Rocker and NT station and for those repeat and repeat my thoughts on how I am sure things will sound... CC1
