What will Cumulus do with Citadel Media?

Why not just voice-track middays instead of nothing? Why doesn't Cumulus utilize voice-tracking more if they can't have somebody live, at least in mid-days?

Depends on the format, but I imagine they're aiming for office and business listening. The less talk the better during that time.

Yet talk radio does surprisingly well in mid-days in most markets. And live mid-days handily beats syndication in many markets.

Different strokes for different folks. Even Cumulus goes live & local in mid-days at several of their all-talk stations.

It's interesting that KCMO in Kansas City, which is classic hits, runs automated mid-days and nights - yet classic hits WGRR in Cincinnati, a similar sized market, has a full staff - even nights. Both stations do well.

Another thing that bugs me about Cumulus is the way they stick that Billy Bush show at NIGHT on their CHR's - that's the last time I want to hear syndication on, of all formats, CHR. Not to mention it's a crummy show...same for that CMT show on their country stations, but that's more tolerable.
On a CHR, I'd rather hear syndication mid-days than nights. That's the time you'll see most stations that carry Seacrest stick him.

CHR targets 18-34 women, who don't listen to a great deal of radio at night. Seacrest is a major attraction for that demo, probably something even the best local talent can't overcome.

Seacrest is not syndicated in the traditional sense; there is no real show... just menu driven segments which are configured into a local show by each station, with the amount of talk and the song selection adapted to each market needs.

About a year ago, Citadel Media came up with their own 7-mid syndicated country show: The Jeremy Show www.jeremyshow.com

If you look at their station list, it's mainly small market stations. Even Jeremy's home station, KSCS Dallas, doesn't run it. Citadel's Atlanta station, WKHX, only runs it Saturday nights. It'll be interesting to see what Cumulus does with this show and other like it.

The Jeremy Show isn't very good, but I can't say it is worse than "CMT Radio Live." Both shows are annoying, but The Jeremy Show at least has a better variety of music.

And it has been around longer than a year.

I wish Cumulus would just voice-track or automate nights instead of putting these second-rate syndicated shows on. I can't believe they put garbage like CMT Live on a heritage station like WSM in Nashville. Their CHR's are so conservative musically that Billy Bush sticks out on them because the show has a more cutting-edge CHR playlist. Look at WRWM in Indianapolis - they play 90s and 00s Hot AC during the day, but run Billy Bush at night, and sound like a full-blown CHR from 7p-11p. If that company is anything, it's disorganized.

I think both shows are forced on the station, no matter how large or small the market is, by corporate. When it comes to corporate handing down orders, Cumulus has got to be the most strict broadcast company there is.

What's the advantage of voice-tracking or automation when you can have a live show from a larger market with big name guests? Do listeners want live human companionship or just an endless segue of songs? We can debate that one all day.

At the same time, listenership from 7 to midnight, regardless of what's on the air, will generally be a fraction of what it is during the day. So it's not like anything they do will increase audience. People are either watching TV, doing homework, or out with friends. Syndication doesn't require the local staff to do anything. That way they can focus their time and talent on dayparts where it matters.

When CMT Radio launched, there were two Cumulus stations around here who picked it up. Prior to CMT, one had a normal staff member on until 11PM (or at least voice tracked, though I seem to remember it wasn't) and the other station had Radio Lia. The fact that both of them switched instantly does make me wonder if CMT Radio Live is/was forced on them. Both stations are at the top of their markets, so I can't think they financially needed to switch over.

CMT Radio Live has almost everything I don't want in a show. I have never met a person who actually likes it. Give me automation over CMT any day. Most people listen to it around here only because it's CMT or nothing.
