What will happen to Channel 11?

KSTW is set to lose its UPN-11 identity this fall, with the merging of UPN and WB networks. The new network, to be called the "CW" will broadcast on the Tribune-owned stations (read KTWB) and KSTW will lose any network affiliation.

So what will we expect from the "new" KSTW? Without a "parent channel" feeding it extraneous programming (KCPQ/KTWB or KING/KONG), it could be left to pick up reruns, bad talk shows, and lots and lots of paid programming.

Hopefully, it will take its independent label to heart and come up with some (heaven forbid!) local programming. When I lived in Los Angeles, there were several indenpendent stations that actually cranked out informative and entertaining programming that wasn't purchased from Ron Popeil or the Magic Bullet.

Here's hoping, KSTW....

According to the plan, UPN owned stations will become CW affiliates, so that should include KSTW. Whichever station currently runs WB will be the odd man out by the looks of things.

We may be the only market that has both a Viacom owned/subsidiary and a Tribune network in play. Based on the terms as stated, either may become the surviving affilliate station.

Looks like it's gonna be KSTW. The Tribune website has all the details here:

So what of KTWB then? Does Seattle have a Telemundo affiliate?

Dude, it clearly says that KSTW is the choice. How much more do you need it to address the issue?

A. KTWB-22 will be an independent come September 2006.
B. Seattle has no Telemundo station, and probably won't see one in the near future.

C. Don't be surprised to see Spanish programming on Seattle TV in 2006 is all I'm saying.

You must be much smarter than me.... where does it say KSTW ANYWHERE in this release?

"Tribune and CBS own overlapping WB and UPN affiliates in seven markets: Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami and New Orleans. Tribune will be the affiliate in Boston, Dallas, Miami and New Orleans, and CBS will be the affiliate in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Seattle. "

Now, if I am not mistaken, Tribune owns both 13 and 22 here. FOX and the WB. CBS owns KSTW? That was news that I had missed!

It doesn't really matter though, they both have a long ways to go before my Tv lands on UPN, WB, CW or whatever they want to call some pretty lame programming.

> Go to upn11.com. Click "About Us" go to the bottom of the screen and read "CBS Television Digital Media Group." It's not that difficult.

Would KTWB be able to revert back to the old KTZZ call letters?
______________

That would be kinda cool if no one else has them now.

> That would be kinda cool if no one else has them now.

No full powered (or low powered) TV station is currently using the KTZZ call letters, so it as least possible for Tribune to restore those call letters. Although considering how marginal KTZZ was in the Seattle/Tacoma market in the decade before the WB, I'm not sure that there are a lot of memories associated with KTZZ for many Puget Sound viewers.

I don't think that KTZZ ever did better than a 2 share of the audience, and that in the days when KSTW and KCPQ were running in the 7 to 10 share range, with the Seattle big network affiliates running double that.

Anyone remember KPLZ's Mark Allen & Jennifer Jett hosting KTZZ's Saturday night lineup known as "Z-TV"? One of the featured shows was Howard Stern's first TV show. I also recall "The Spud Goodman Show" replacing Howard Stern. I think I still have a tape of Kent & Alan skydiving during a "Z-TV" segment.
______________

my guess is that they'll sell off even MORE blocks of time to PAID PROGRAMMING spots. It will become like ION. 3 hours of regular programs, reruns or what have you and the balance of the 24 hour schedule will be Paid Programming. Just what we need more of.
