What will happen to Forever after next book?

Cary has more knowledge then anyone that posts on any of these boards combined. He's spent more time in a bathroom than any of you have spent in the radio business. Each and every station he has, he built from scratch. And they are actually a breath of fresh air to listen too, compared to the cookie cutter crap that's out there. I'll listen to an AMN station before I'll ever listen to a Forever property.

Chris, you said it better than I did! Ditto!

He must love radio, he could of sold them all for millions.

He does. More than that, he loves radio for what it should be...and that's NOT something that's overconsulted, overresearched, overtested, etc. He's not a greedy guy by any means. His stations have much more character than anything owned by the big boys. That's why I love small market radio so much.

Haven't we been through this before?

Let's look at the difference between Forever and Allegheny Mountain Network.

Forever - Borrowed money that is refinanced on a regular basis. AMN - Built on one man's dream and vision and personal funds.

Forever - Worried about Paying off the loans and keeping Carol Logan happy. AMN - Worried about taking care of the communities they serve.

I have worked for both and I am proud to say I am a member of the AMN family. Also glad to be not in the Forever group of revolving employees.

I'll put it another way! If Cary called or emailed me tonight, and said I need help. I'd drive 12 hours straight from Tennessee to help, and wouldn't ask for a dime. I ran the Forever stations, and quit, in frustration in 1998.

You know, until yeaterday I was OM of the Forever/State College cluster (and yes, I left on MY OWN for a great opportunity before any firing rumors start) and I have to chime in here...I am going to highjack the Forever bashing to say a few good things.

Having worked in many different markets for many different owners, I have to say that the crew in the Forever/State College office is on of the best I have ever been around. The PD's, Troy Craig, Tony Ricciardi, Dave Shannon, Bob Taylor and the newly appointed Lite PD Ken Prell all love their stations and lead by example and I think the sound of these stations reflect that.

I know the term "cookie cutter" was used to describe the stations...that couldn't be any further from the truth. I know I programmed a station that shared the same brand name as stations in Altoona & Johnstown, but Hot 103 was programmed locally...local music decisions, promotions, talent, imaging, et al. Even though none of the other stations in the SC office share names as other Forever stations, there are others that share the same format and I know for a fact that the programming decisions for the SC stations are made for the SC stations, not to be "cookie cutter."

Are there some of the same syndicated shows on other Forever AM's? Yes. But look at what is done with the local programming time. Kevin Nelsno & Dave Shannon run a GREAT full-service morning show that is entertaining and informative. WMAJ sounded bigger than ANY of the other stations in the market the last few days with Game Night SC, the Pre and post game shows for PSU Football live from South Bend...too bad the team didn't show up ;)

In addition to those I have already mentioned, people like Jeff Brown, Jerry Valeri, Scotty Brilliant, Voz, Pat Boland and the slew of part-timers that make those stations run, are all talented, hard working individuals that made me a better broadcaster for having had the opportunity to work with them.

Yes, I know, there are the times when automation didn't fire right or other technical screw-ups...but that happens at every station in the market and at stations of every market size all around this country. That being said, I think these stations are doing great radio for a market the size of State College.

I would also like to say that I have a tremendous amount of respect for other radio folk in the market...Nick Bazoo...Amy B @ B94.5...Steve Jones...all class acts who help to make State College a fun radio market.

Now back to the AMN lovefest!

And I'd probably ask you to stop by and pick me up on the way, Chris. I'd do the same. :)

Glen,

You have always been a class act. Good luck with your new gig.

There are some great people at Forever. It isn't the Dave Shannon's, Kevin Nelson's or Bob Taylor's who are the negative in Forever. They are pros.

It is the way Forever does business that I always had a problem with. They are very good at leaving a bad taste in many mouths.

Again good luck Glen.

If you ever got to know Cary Simpson, you would appreciate the loyalty shown to him.

Very much an understatement. His people stay with him. Some of them have been around for as long as the stations have been on the air!

I've been pretty quiet for a while...but I am gonna poke my head above water for Glen! By the way, my posts have dropped off a lot due to all the bashing on here. Not that I think anyone cares, but whether you think I have some good points, or I am full of it...I have a passion for the biz and there are far too many instances on here anymore where people make their comments personal attacks against the people who post and I just don't want to be part of that mess.

Anyway...back to the point for my post! Good for you Glen! I wish you well. Always was my favorite DJ on Hot. You kept the station programmed tight and you were always entertaining to listen to. I got to hear you a few times on Lite and my heart went out to you. Would be like tossing me into Froggy and say "Go do it". I could...but I'd be miserable...just not my cup of tea. You were at your best on afternoons at Hot.

People (myself included) can say what we will about Forever and Hot (Beaver....the old "B")...whatever people wanna call them...but some people have spingboarded into some pretty impressive markets through those doors. I just learned Grooves is in DC now doing nights!

Happy trails to ya Glen and if you ever get back up this way again...maybe next time we will be in the same corner instead of competitors....or maybe not LOL

Take care
Steve

Congrats Glen, well deserved for sure!! You were great to work for and can take alot of credit for helping me develop as a jock. Your stations always sounded top notch in my mind.

State College always was a great launching pad. I am far from the first person to use it as a springboard. Alot of talented folks have passed through there and hopefully more will. I was priveleged to work with some of the best.

Steve where you been, haven't heard from you?

Anyway, back to watching from the sidelines. Hope all is well and I look forward to hearing everyone when I'm in town for the Michigan game. Anyone gonna let me do a shift?

Don't think I didn't love Lite as much as Hot, because I did (and still do). I think the station has great potential (ratings and revenue) and Ken will do a fantastic job with the station!

p.s. G or B really should pick up Grooves' Mix Show :)

Where are you headed to Glen?

Sorry it took so long to get back...I am now at WERZ in Portsmouth, NH (just over the Massachusetts border...about 45 miles from Boston, my hometown!).

Mr. Mic I wish you the best of luck. Heard you on the air a couple times in State College and you sounded cool. What airshift are you workin' at the new gig?
