What will happen to WGHP?

A 4:00 newscast wouldn't make any difference re network affiliation; WTVD (ABC o&o) has one. I do agree, though, that WGHP will not go back to ABC; as I pointed out they have too much to lose in terms of timeslots given back to the network. Also, they have NASCAR (and the Triad is the highest-rated market in the country for NASCAR racing) and the Carolina Panthers, and they would be crazy to give those up. I'm sure these are things that will be taken into consideration when FOX8's current contract is up for renewal.

I somehow feel that ABC's chance of getting off WXLV rests on a real longshot: that Disney sells ABC to Hearst, and ABC moves to current NBC affiliate WXII/12. But again, I am not at all optimistic about that happening.
I would not want to see that. WSOC is bad about pre-empting ABC programming, though with a TiVo it's not really a big deal because the machine tapes the programs whenever they are on.

For the first six months of digital TV, with WXLV in a new location I didn't even WATCH WSOC. WXLV gave me results as close to perfect as I could ask for. I saw every minute of every episode of "Defying Gravity" on WXLV. Then the problems began and I just switched back to WSOC on cable most of the time. And I no longer have a VCR connected to an antenna, so watching on WXLV is quite rare these days.

WXII has no chance unless I spend the money on an outdoor antenna. It's just too far north. I picked it up when I was first setting up but I may have just been lucky.

Hearst is a Big CBS group owner as Gannett is a big NBC group owner, I would have thought if there were any flips - those would be the ones. I recall back during the HDTV hearings in the late 80's, one network rep stated he doubted that the Big 3 would survive as they existed at the time. With more people viewing online, it will be interesting to see who goes totally online first. If Aero gets their way, it might be sooner than later.

Hearst a big CBS group? I don't think so; they own WLKY Louisville and, IIRC, KCCI Des Moines, but I think practically all their other stations are either ABC or NBC affiliates. And if there's a suggestion here (and I may be reading between the lines) of a WFMY-WXII swap, forget it. There's no way WFMY will ever leave CBS short of its becoming an o&o of some other network, which I don't think will happen either. If CBS wanted an o&o in North Carolina, WBTV or WRAL would be their best bet and even then there's no sure thing; WRAL prides itself on being one of the last locally-owned stations in the country and WBTV is co-flagship (with NBC affiliate WSFA Montgomery, AL) of Raycom.

And again, I think that any chance of WXII's going to ABC is predicated on Hearst's buying the network, which at this point I'm not putting any money on.

I wouldn't want to lose CBS either. I can get it with an antenna but it's also on cable.

WBTV is my usual station but it wouldn't have to be because of this unique situation. They have a tradition of not caring whether they air certain CBS shows.

It is interesting that FOX chose to sell WGHP-8 several years ago then turn right around and purchase WJZY-46 and WMYT-55 in Charlotte. I guess maybe there is more revenue in a Top 25 market.

Right now, Tribune's problem is with the CW; apparently it feels the sixth-place network (after CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and Univision) is showing no signs of getting out of that position and consequently is switching WTTV Indianapolis to CBS come January 1. The possibility, as mentioned on threads on the National TV board, also exists that Tribune could move KPLR St. Louis to ABC, although there's nothing definite there. I don't think that at this point there are issues between Tribune and Fox, nothing that would lead to WGHP's going to ABC or anywhere else.
