What will happen to WIUX? Indiana University, Bloomington

The moving of Connersville's 100.3 to Cincinnati had created an open frequency in South
Central Indiana. The FCC is now moving a Columbus station to 100.3. Because WIUX is
licensed as a secondary service, IU, Bloomington may lose it's student radio station on 100.3

After some research and phone calls, I was told that Indiana University will be partnering with AMP in construction of an LP signal on WBWB tower. It will only exist at 100 watts but should cover most of the Bloomington Proper.

Huh...Art's a "BIG" IU person...alumni and such...having said that, I wonder how much he will be fleecing IU for the rental space on WBWB's transmitter tower.

Someone does'nt know what they are talking about.
This has nothing to do with AMP. The FCC will simply
find a new channel for WIUX-LP.
Can anyone name an LPFM that has lost it's license?
We have 2 of them in Lafayette. Too bad Purdue
students didn't get one like IU.

The WBWB information is incorrect. They are not contemplating any move.
WIUXLP has a great location now.

The Connersville 100.3 situation will be interesting to follow. The frequency has a lot of room to move including into the southern aurban area of Indy where it would be worth a lot of money.

WIUXLP is not going off the air anytime soon.

Do any of the other posters have inside inforamtion or are employees of some of the Columbus stations that are trying to move to 100.3?

We hope that Indiana University can save their radio station.
It would be a shame if the FCC takes them off the air so that
commercial licensees can expand. We feel for the kids at IU.

After Cumulus moves Seymour into Louisville it looks as if a directional signal from the WBWB tower on 93.5 nulled to protect 93.3 in Linton is a possibility for a full class A signal for those IU kids. Don't you agreee that is a better use for 93.5 than in overradioed Columbus?

Even with 93.7 gone, the FCC won't allow 93.5 in Bloomington.
My opinion is that 93.7 should remain in Seymour! They deserve
one commercial channel. That's too bad also.

That would need to be a highly directional A...it is about 40 miles from WQTY's TX to WBWB's. FCC spacing calls for 60 miles. Might be able to get 1000 watts directional away from Bloomington.

it is about 40 miles from WQTY's TX to WBWB's.
49 miles by the coordinates at the FCC database.
FCC spacing calls for 60 miles.
A to B1 1st adjacent separation works out to 55 miles.
Columbus appears to be a petition for rulemaking.
Nothing to stop someone from applying for the same
frequency elsewhere. Columbus sure as hell doesn't need
any more radio.

I was a D student in math.
Divide by 5. Carry the 1.
That should be 60 miles.
Columbus still doesn't need another radio station.
Grow a pair FCC and learn to tell people no.

Hot Coffee,  I see what you are talking about.  Bruce Quinn is involved in 93.5 at Columbus and
the building of WIUX  for IU.  We found this in the Columbus newspaper October 2005.

"In mid-2004, after suffering three small strokes, Quinn sold his longtime alternative WKLU-FM station in Indianapolis and moved to Columbus with his wife, Mitzi, and stepchildren. Loyal fans lamentedly called it the loss of “the last DJ,” but Quinn wasn’t done yet.
By fall 2004, his deep voice was beaming all over Columbus through his backyard WHUM antenna. He has plans to expand its signal to reach as far as Indianapolis on 93.5 FM"

And WIUX

"Quinn strolled across the sunny grounds of Indiana University-Bloomington. He was visiting students who ran longtime AM radio station WIUS, where Quinn worked as a student years before.
He accompanied them to the top of the towering, limestone main library. For the first time, WIUS was planning to expand to FM so they could reach all of campus, and this was where they wanted to mount the antenna. Quinn said, they would expand their signal not only to all of Bloomington, but they would even reach Brown County"

Bruce Quinn should call Art for tower space!

Bruce is an Alumni of IU, as will the 40,000 current students who attend IU will be someday. WIUS applied for the LP station in 2000 when Bruce was still running WKLU.

Bruce is known to be active before the FCC, having made numerous allocation table changes in Indiana. He had nothing to do with WIUX-LP application to the FCC. Lee Easily, who did the work in 2000, should be given the credit.

WHUM-LP is one of several Columbus FM stations so I guess Bruce probably has some idea what is going on with the Edinburg/Columbus station.

I am told he figured out the 93.5 will work because of the of the Indy FM station moving the Seymour Class B on 93.7 to Louisville as a Class A on 93.9. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out why 93.5 all of a sudden will work around Columbus.

Heck, Seymour will still have a station, 1390 AM, 1kw days, 74 watts nights. Nice channel like that should work just as well for the service area around Seymour as does their Class B FM station (25,000 watts, 699 foot HAAT on 93.7) being moved to underserved Louisville, KY.

I'm told that the other stations in Louisville are quaking in their shoes over the prospect of 93.9 coming on the air. With a call like theirs, WQKC, just the phrase "Big Q Country" could cause a significant number of 39 local Louisville AM and FM stations to just give up and sign off for good.

Columbus is underserved with only 12 AM and FM stations on the air with-in 20 miles of town. 93.5 should make the Lucky 13th signal. Just the right number for the booming Coumbus metropolis: population 39,000.

Is there still a WCSI FM?

The pirate is a petulant ...HAS-BEEN.
Scratch that.
The pirate is a petulant ...NEVER-WAS!
The French may LOVE Jerry Lewis.
That doesn't make Jerry Lewis FUNNY.
The newspaper writers may LOVE the pirate.
That DOESN'T make the pirate a BROADCASTER.
The pirate gets some FREAKISH kick jamming in radio stations where RADIO STATIONS AREN'T NEEDED.
The pirate DOESN'T CARE about those IU kids.
The pirate DOESN'T CARE about Columbus.
IF the pirate gets a license for 93.5 he'll ...CUT and RUN... for the best offer.
Just like ATTICA and BROWNSBURG.
The pirate should have had his ears SLAPPED BACK a few more times as a KID.
The pirate should have had parents that said NO.
Now the FCC needs to TEACH the pirate the meaning of NO!
The trouble is ...thats NOT their job.
The pirate and his ilk make radio suck.

Hot Coffee, aren't you from QXIX {WRZQ} in Columbus? Does your opinion represent Keith?

Only a ...SENILE... old dog can make that LEAP in logic.

YOO HOO HOT COFFEE!

The company that owns QMIX (WRZQ) has a much more extensive record of selling CPs
than Quinn ever did. How about Marengo, Veedersburg, and many more. I'd bet they
already have a buyer for 100.3 and they will never build it. That's right I think IU is
losing it's radio station so someone can make a buck. Oink! Oink! Oink!
And, since Hope 102.9 is going on the QMIX tower, isn't there already plans for
it's sale to QMIX as well.
