What will it take for B94 to succeed?

I was looking on the RR Website and for the winter ratings, B94 appears to be doing a lot better than compared to last year and is steadily improving, however, it still is low on the list well behind 96.1 Kiss. B94 had a 2.4 while Kiss had a 4.3. What do you think needs to be done for B94 to really fight Kiss head on? I know time is a factor and publicity, but do you think more needs to be done?

First I think they need to get a full airstaff. It's been 7 months now and B 94 does not have a midday, overnight, and no weekend jocks. I'm not in radio and wanted to know if someone could tell me how much voice tracking is being done on the B? Is CBS still paying the big salaries from the Zone Talk Show hosts? In my opinion, the morning show is not as good as I expected it to be.

Second, I think B 94 needs to be promoted more. I saw only about 2 commercials on TV for B 94. I have not seen a single billboard in Pittsburgh. I live out in the Monroeville area, so I'm not real sure if there are B 94 billboards north and south of the city.

In my opinion, I think summer will be a big test for B 94. I remember the days when B 94 had Kennywood and Sandcastle day:)

You make some good points Todd.

I agree, they need to promote more. I haven't seen any billboard either. They need to do more events as well, just like Kennywood and Sandcastle. I think most people know B94 is back, but there are probably many who don't, regardless, they need to really push the station. CBS really needs to go all out with promotion or they won't succeed.

You're also right about the morning show. I've listened to their morning show and it isn't good. They need to retire Bubba and his sidekick and get more younger hosts tailored to that audience. While Bubba may have attracted women audience listeners who were 18-34 in the 1990s, times have changed, those women aren't generally listening to B94 anymore, the younger generation is carrying that demographic now and they are not as familiar with Bubba, nor does he target their age range as well as he used to. Perhaps promote one the young B94 DJs (the ones I made fun of before for being 'kids'... :D) or hire away some Kiss DJs. While Kiss Fm's morning show is terrible in my opinion, its successful in bringing in its demographics despite having no creative content!

Skew HOt AC during the day with live jocks. Go more Churban at night.

Blow up Star and combine air staff

Flip Star to Soft AC to fill gap left by WLTJ. Get their old people if possible.

Let me ask this question...what does everyone think of Melanie's place on the morning show? It's great she is back at the B, but it's still just "Buckhead & Bubba" and I never hear her mentioned. Yes, during the show she is on and whatnot, but after the show is over, it seems like Melanie is never in any of the Buckhead & Bubba promotions throughout the day. Personally, I think she should be in the midday slot, not on the morning show. With that being said, A MIDDAY HOST IS NEEDED! How about throwing the Ron-Man in on weekends for a slot, then hire a female and those two can swap back and forth on weekends.

And yes, PROMOTIONS! No joke, a friend of mine nearly drove her car off the road not too long ago when she was flipping through the stations and realized B94 was back. Some people DO live under rocks! If the billboard is not screaming at them on 28 or the Parkway, forget it! (And even at that, some people still live in a complete fog!)

In my opinion, the station is almost there, it's like it's on the cusp of reaching the top of the hill. It still doesn't have that zest and Pittsburgh feel that the old B did. Maybe because the old B was a part of the whole Pittsburgh area for 23 years, I dunno, but there is still something not right and I can't put my finger on it! 96.1 has a lot of the young, high school, college age listeners, maybe because the DJs go and get trashed right along with the kids, I have no idea. The only B94 DJ that seems to tap into the younger age group is Flick...he has potential.

So those are my thoughts!

I generally listen to the morning show from 6:30-7:30 while on the road to work. It's boring and lacks chemistry between the hosts. "Adam Bomb and Flick" in the morning would've made a better show. Apparently they worked together in another city and probably are friends in real life. Buckhead is an OK leader; He's professional and has a nice voice. But for some reason I get the feeling that he doesn't want to be here in Pittsburgh. :-\

Melanie should have a more advanced role in the show. For starters, the name should be changed to "Buckhead, Bubba & Melanie". I'd like to hear her reading the news on the station in the way Shelley Duffy did every hour or half-hour. Bubba needs to get his butt back out on the streets and Buckhead needs a younger co-host in his early 20s. But I doubt they have a budget for four members right now.

They definitely need more promo to get the momentum rolling for this station. They killed whatever hype they had in Oct 2007 by taking forever to get an airstaff in place and not promoting the station at all. Even now with most of the airstaff in place, it still feels like this station doesn't even exist!

I agree with much of what has already been said here.

Flick is by far the best jock they have going. Buckhead is not bad, not good. Bubba fits better on the 30-something soccer mom station 100.7. I thought I remembered Melanie Taylor being a little more attractive in the past. But, none the less, I agree that she should have a much larger role in the morning show.

I would love to see the rest of the numbers, but only getting a 2.4 share 12+ this last book is still PATHETIC. To make it even worse, Kiss has stayed in the steady 4.0-shares. Both B94 and Kiss should be in the mid 3-shares battling it out neck and neck. My crystal ball tells me unless CBS gives it more money - promotions, staff and most importantly more time than they did with K rock, B94 will be toast before next fall.

You think CBS Radio would really pull B94 if it doesn't seriously compete against Kiss FM, Even after all the hype? If they did that, they might as well give up and play elevator music.

You know, I'm surprised no one's tried that yet. You never know what surprises you could find in that next book!

Even the WSHH of the late 70's and early 80's commanded good numbers despite the obvious robo-jocking from Joe Fenn and Tom Malloy! :D

You would be top 3 in 12+ ratings, not even on the map 25-54, and make less income than they get from the snake-oil shows on 620.

B94 needs many many many more billboards and some TV advertising.

They also need to do DJ events in the South Side, not the Strip. The Strip is in a yucky/has-been state right now and it doesn't help B94's image to have a bunch of events there.

The morning show is a train wreck. Melanie needs a larger role at the expense of Buckethead, who just doesn't have it.

CBS isn't going to give them the cash to go plug in the rest of a staff until they start showing some revenue. They only vehicle they have for that is the morning show.

I KNOW I heard a DJ on B94 around noon today. I couldn't listen long and only heard him cut in after a song...sounded not too bad. Any idea who it was?

They hired someone else to do middays and I think he started already b/c it wasnt Ron-Man I heard the other day. I guess we'll find out when they update the webpage

And have you ever seen a billboard for any CBS station.... I think I saw one for Y108 coming out of PGP last summer and that was it. They rather spend money on getting new cars every two years instead of bus stations. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I do agree that Bubba was better suited for WZPT even tho he wanted to be back on B.

B94 Needs to either get its old air staff back or flip 100.7 to active Rock and B94 takes all of 100.7's airstaff.
