What works in Savannah....

Well...Savannah is also market number 90-something. Jacksonville is about 40 spaces down.

And you bring up the best point of all...WAEV's competition has been sub-par at best for the last 8 years or so. An iffy Z-102, Mix 102-1, 92.3, 98.3 for like...six months?, and now 107.9

Jacksonville has had "The Ape" which is probably one of the oldest top 40 stations on the east coast due to their monster 690 signal in the 60's-70's. HUGE name recognition.

Also, Kiss Jax was on a frequency which really couldn't cover the sprawling Jax metro completely. WAEV is arguably one of the top three best signals in the area.

Oh yeah...I should also bring up that Savannah is the same market where WTOC-TV has dominated news ratings since Reagan was in his first term. That's also when they last updated their graphics and news intros...and most of their anchors.

It's a serious case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" in this neck of the woods. KISS, Rock 106-1, Love, KIX, E-93, the Beat, the Q, I-95, the River, Oldies 98-3 aren't broke...nobody's gonna fix 'em anytime soon!

Notice anything about those stations? Most have been around for 10-20+ years. There aren't too many markets with over half their stations that have survived that many ratings books.

You hit the nail on the head. And that's why Savannah radio has stayed boring for eons, and will continue to be boring for eons to come.

You're right. Savannah radio is very boring because a lot of the players choose not to make their stations evolve with the times. There's very little in the way of change from one year to the next. Perhaps it's because no one is motivated enough to dig in and do something different to get the listeners excited about the stations. Even most of the imaging is the same-old-same-old. Playing Lady Gaga every 55 minutes may work for a while but it certainly doesn't last long term. Is it any wonder why I-Pods sell so well?

The 2 KISS stations were WAY different. WAEV was a southeastern CHR (which means it played Rock and Hot AC songs some of the big cities don't). KISS Jax was a station that was almost Rhythmic CHR.

And KISS in Savannah dominates in large part thanks to Kidd Kraddick.

In daypart only.

It may carry listeners up through lunch. Kraddick has no impact afterwards. Lex & Terry are a bigger morning driver in this market (sadly) than Kidd.

The Beat in Savannah has had some tweaks Since it started. The 1st year it was almost all hip hop Southern Crunk Music. then it was mainstreamed by Bo Money. More R&B added and Hip hop from the rest of the country not just Southern rap. Then later it about another year was tweaked again to almost 75% R&B. About another year it balanced back to close to Cookie cutter CC Urban. after Sagging Ratings the Beat Was tweaked again, using the Fake "The Beat was Flipping" stunt. Playlist was Widened and Star and Bucwild was added to the station. That lasted till Star and Bucwild were fired. Russ Parr was brought back on and Music slowly went back to CC Cookie Cutter Urban again. Then Bo Money Leaves for Detroit and Chase from Charlotte comes in. He Changes Imaging VO Person Contests and Starts to Shift the Music Playlist toward a Rhythmic Format, added Rhythmic Mix Shows. At one time ce-oh that also came from charlotte even called the Beat Savannah's Party Station. About 2 years ago Chase brought in this "Scandal" stunt And had Deuce from KDHT Austin as the Blackmailer. I think it was about to lead in to the Beat Flipping to a Full Rhythmic station. However due to numbers or the powers that be, The Scandal Stunt was stopped and the Station Remained Urban. Shortly after the Rhythmic mix shows were removed from the station. The station is basically back to CC Cookie cutter Urbam again. with maybe the occasionl Rhythmic Song added in Like DJ got us falling in Love PITBULL and USHER Rihanna S&M etc.

Kiss has lost it's Rock and Hot AC Lean Since Russ was let go Other than that Savannah really hasn't seen much change since 102.1 went sports. Still scratching my head with that one.
