What would they call 106.7?

Been wondering if CC might take 106.7 Adult Hits after Christmas or Jan 1, given

-- CC has been doing very well with the format in medium-sized markets lately, including Cleveland where the Lake gets great numbers
-- Jack was just starting to pick up some major ratings steam when Salem took over and plugged in conservatalk
-- 106.7 may be under-performing relative to the potential its newly beefed-up signal provides
-- Alternative/New Rock is over-represented locally (albeit with different-styled approaches), and that means less potential than exclusive format ownership (see:  93.3's highly successful flip from AC #2 to sole oldies station).

But one conundrum is that CC has a custom of naming its Adult Hits station after topographical landmarks in the area.  For instance, the Lake in Cleveland and the Harbor in Boston.  So what could they call a local Adult Hits?  The only really obvious choice -- The River -- is of course already taken.  There's the Shoe, but somehow that doesn't seem right.  The Reservoir (for Hoover or Griggs) doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.  How about the Mile, for the Scioto Mile?  They could image around "Miles of music," or "a Mile-long set of music starts now, on 106.7 the Mile," etc.

In a way the Mile wouldn't fit the pattern because it's based on something that's man-made.  I suppose it could be named after a notable street, such as "106.7 the Broad," but that of course presents other problems.

Any other ideas?

EDIT:  Actually, "The Shoe kicks off another long set of music" may have possibilities. Or "at the office or in the car, wherever you are the Shoe fits" or "step into another long set of music at the Shoe," etc, etc.

Just make it WTVN's FM simulcast. They ruined the Gen X format and have underperformed ever since. I really can't think of anything they'll make work on that frequency.

106.7 has already had Adult Hits, as "Gen-X" in between "Radio 106.7" and "X106.7." Obviously it wasn't doing well if Clear Channel felt the need to switch it.

Instead of music, perhaps try to comptete with 97.1 by doing a simulcast of Fox Sports 1230. I'm sure people would like to listen to Fox Sports, Reds, Bengals, and OU Bobcats on an FM rather than a 1,000 watt AM. Maybe bring in a local personality for afternoons (or go after Torg after his six-month non-compete is over).

Brutus 106.7 because our market is so freaking brutal!
Actually, I think Brutus 106.7 sounds great despite that sordid back story. :).

I think flipping to Adult Hits is something that we all would love, but I don't see CC doing that so fast.
Well, 106.7 has been alternative a whole year now. Kind of hard to believe.

Buck 106.7
While that seems like a natural, couldn’t it confuse folks into expecting sportstalk and/or game broadcasts? And even lead Dispatch to sue?

Capitol 106.7, since Columbus is the State Capitol.
Sounds good, and of course it's a downtown Columbus landmark, too.

Or just go with the generic "Jack FM" moniker. They did that in Jacksonville this past Spring.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I was thinking CC’s only Jack-FM was in Baltimore, and even then only because it was already Jack when they acquired it from CBS.

IMO, Gen-X was a very different animal from a Jack-type station despite mixing some diverse music genres. Just for starters, Gen-X was 90s-based, while Jack-type Adult Hits is 80s-heavy. CC has killed off virtually all the Gen-X’s, which were generally doing poorly, even as they continue adding Jack-type Adult Hits stations and have plenty of ongoing success with many of them.

It's too bad they'll probably kill alternative for the 3rd time. Personally, 106.7 sounded best about a year ago when they were still calling themselves "Gen X" but evolving into an alternative. It reminded me of the old Channel Z: It had a wide and diverse playlist that really defined the station as more mainstream than 102.5, edgier than NCI, but lighter than 997. Anyone know if it was programmed locally then? Or was that a different Premium Choice format?

I don't think Premium Choice existed until years after Channel Z's demise. Also, while Z may have been fairly diverse in terms of styles, I recall it having a distinctly short, high-rotation list. It struck me as more like "Alt 40," the way you used to have "Rock 40."

I'd say with Clear Channel firing off it's local staff on Oldies 933 I would say the oldies would move here and 933 becomes a simulcast of WTVN. Or 933 becomes X933 and 106.7 becomes the simulcast of WTVN. Or worse yet WNCI moves to 106.7 and 97.9 becomes the WTVN simulcast. The Morning Zoo would be shocked if that happens. Not To mention open the door for a true CHR competitor.

They won't touch NCI, as it's been the #1 station in town in almost every book I've ever seen. CC isn't that stupid.

While you're at it, throw in a moveof WCOL to 106.7, and a return of 92X! ;D

I read in Tom Taylor's new newsletter that talk has gotten harder to sell -- at least nationally -- in the wake of Limbaugh's slut/whore comments about Sandra Fluke. I wonder if this will have any effect on WTVN's future, or at least the amount of serious consideration a move to FM gets. Also I would imagine the demos are still not in the best -- and probably headed further in the wrong direction -- even for FM political talk. This may all be less relevant for a model like Salem's, which is not as dependent on ratings.

They'd just cannibalize WNCI if they did that.

They can't cannibalize WNCI much more than they have?... Outside of Mornings and Afternoons is NCI even local? I am pretty sure nights and overnights are PC or out of market talent.. I know it sounds like a Premium choice shift overnights when I have listened.

WCOL, WNCI and I am sure Oldies 93.3 at this point will stay in their location for the time to come.. I don't see them even attempting to change Oldies 93.3 as they have found a 'sweet spot' with the present format.

If any station(s) will ever see changes it will be 106.7 and 105.7 to a lesser chance.

I agree with this most. As dumb as CC can be, repeatedly, my guess is 106.7 goes to WTVN-FM. Living east of town where the signal drops dramatically at night (although here in Thornville it actually comes in well; I'm a few miles south of a very deep null), I'd love a WTVN-FM.

Nu, I think Dave was meaning if 106.7 was PC when it was still Gen X. IIRC, it was programmed locally for awhile. Johnboy Crenshaw & Laura Lee oversaw the station from what I remember. I'm guessing by the time they flipped it to X106.7, they probably switched off to the PC log. 103.9 The X/WXEG runs the same log. They do have a live/local afternoon guy, Steve Dent. He's the only one that survived the bloodbath from last year at The X. CC didn't hit Dayton during last week's round of cuts.
