What would you do with AM 1520?

According to Bill Virgin's column, Andy Skotdal as adding a second AM. (according to the FCC its 50,000 watts day, 10k night licensed to Snohomish) personally I don't see where the city of Snohomish needs a 50k AM station and with the long time AM's like KOMO & KIRO not doing so great, I have no idea what might work. What would you put on this frequency to serve the city of Snohomish with local programming like Skotdal claims he wants to do?

With all the interference these days, leaky cable TV coax, PC hash, noisy powerlines, etc. AM stations need 50KW just to penetrate the noise floor. You ever try to get decent AM at your office cubicle?

As for programming, if Andy's got the resources here's a chance to create a real community station. Let's hear the City and County council meetings. Give me the Swap Shop on the air. High School play by play and broadcast from the grocery store. Have the mayor take phone calls. Get the Navy base PRO on the air. Do shout outs to Sailors from their families...All the things that the Seattle signals can't/won't do and he could have a winner.

Syndicated talk shows = death for 1520. Let's get live and local, down and dirty!

Is there any opportunity for some "consolidation" between Everett and the Mt. Vernon or Anacortes stations; or does that not make sense if both Everett's are 50KW and can easily cover those Skagit areas?

Speaking of which ... anyone have feedback on how things are going at KLKI under new ownership?

Given the 1520 in Portland (licensed to suburban Oregon City), any hopes of putting a dependable signal into Seattle and being a 'player' would be pure fantasy. So being a real local Snohomish County station (back to the great old news days of Shirley Bartholomew at KRKO and Tom Lewis at KWYZ) is his only hope. Or the aforementioned syndicated dumping ground. Or Spanish.

and with all that AM-Optimod processing it ought to sound like .... well ... it probably won't sound like anything. This may be a good time to corner the download concession as you may have a whole new genre on your hands!

Thrash metal is one of those genres where it really doesn't matter what you're broadcasting off of, AM or FM because the audience for it is less discriminating on fidelity...as most people pounding their skulls into other skulls and brick walls tend to be.

The cheap beer/malt liquor industries spots alone will undoubtedly support the station and format.

But 1520? I've always gotten that Portland station loud an clear every night (especially winter nights.) I can imagine what it would sound like south of Snohomish County.....

Now THERE'S a new idea...MARIACHI METAL!! It's kinda like System Of A Down... but with trumpets, accordions, tubas and lyrics/singers en espanol.......
