That may be true, but that's kind of an "apples & oranges" argument. KROQ is in one of the biggest markets in the country (and faces other Modern Rock competitors), whereas WHTG/WBBO is in a smaller market with no Modern Rock competition. My criticism in a nutshell: G Rock Radio doesn't play enough pre-1991 music, there's not enough currents, and there's a little too much generic tripe (Tonic, Puddle Of Mudd, Nickelback, Switchfoot, 3 Doors Down) and bubblegum fluff (No Doubt, Blink 182) for most real Modern Rock fans. They're playing too much of what can already be heard on other stations, in particular the Rock station (WRAT) and the Hot ACs (WJLK, WSJO, WAYV, etc.).

That's not to say that I totally dislike G Rock Radio - on the contrary. They do play several strong currents, have some good specialty shows (the only gripe: I'm not waking up at 7 AM to hear shows on the weekend)), and a strong air staff that ties it all together. The regular playlist even has its moments, but it's dragged down by too much of the same old same old. If they can work on broadening their library and cutting back on the repetition (what I mean by repetition: They don't pound the currents into the ground, but I hear the same Gold library tracks day in and day out), they'll become a great station that will improve upon its current audience. Ditch some of the current generic tripe for stuff like Joy Division, The Smiths / Morrissey, Depeche Mode, The Pixies, The Replacements, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins (Yes G, there's more to them than just ballads), Rage Against The Machine, A Perfect Circle, etc - bands that seldom or never (SP being an exception, but they only play their ballads) receive any kind of rotation on G.

FM 106.3 was an excellent station - it just didn't have the money to promote itself correctly, and that put a limit on its following. If the folks at Press were really passionate about the format, they would have kept it under this name and programmed it the same way. Alas, they opted for the safe hit-intensive route instead. G Rock Radio is basically what K-Rock was as a Modern Rocker - only without the heavier stuff.
