What Would You Do?

With all the talk about how bad Infinity Radio New York is running their FM stations, I wanted to make a topic to say what you would do if you were in Infinity's shoes?

Here is what I would do:

Mix 102.7 - stays the same

WCBS-FM 101.1 - give Jack one more month or so, if nothing major happens with the ratings dump Jack. Change 101.1 in a Hot AC format. They would have a 70s weekend. This just to have some oldies heard. I doubt Infinity would bring back Oldies which they dumped for Jack, by hey Infinity in Texas dumped Hip Hop for Talk and brought Hip Hop back on 104.3

K-ROCK 92.3 - would dump rock also but wouldn't of went with FREE-FM. Maybe Hip Hop, 92.3 The Beat. This as Infinity does program Hip Hop stations well and it would be funny to see what Howard would say after he leaves 92.3 goes Hip Hop. As if New York needs a third Hot 97, I know. Here is one that I do like. Infinity starts to compete with Clear Channel's 106.7 LITE FM by making 92.3, Sunny 92.3 with a AC format that would some oldies mixed in with AC tracks.

I would do the same since the station is becoming more and more solid and is worrying KTU a little.

> WCBS-FM 101.1 -

I would change it to an AC/Oldies type of format, like Sunny 1045 in Philly, but lighter than Lite FM.

Or to an upbeat AC format like what Mix was in late 2003/early 2004.

I would give FM Talk a try, but better than what Infinity is planning.

If FM Talk fails, then maybe an FM all news format like WINS or WCBS 880.

EASY

1. 92.3 FM if left to me would continue with Alt. Rock. I would not have a nationally syndicated jock and I would focus on growing a listener base. I would utilize as much College student man-power as possible to recruit new listeners.

2. 101.1 - Oldies, without calling it that. It would have to be tweaked to optimize ratings and ad buys. I would not play a Disco song after a 60's song. It kills it for me.

3. 102.7 would be a mixture of Rock and Classic Rock. It would be music and artist intensivee, such as the old NEW was. The station needs to act like it knows what time it is.

This applies to all radio stations. If you are a Rock station and did not run a special program about John Lennon, then you truly stink. It is not about playing the most songs an hour. Ads should be relevant to the listeners. They should want to know what is happening in their town.

And last but most important:

1. Local= this is what makes a station a winner.
2. local
3. local
4. day-parting= this is what makes it the dominant force in the market.

I am not a consultant nor do I work in radio, just an avid lisener who hates to see FM go down the drain.

News Radio 101.1 WCBS-FM (Maybe)

Now that doesn't seem a bad idea at all for New York City to have an FM News station. But that would hurt 880 and 1010 big time. Plus Infinity would have to figure out on what to do with 880 and 1010 if they did want to make say WCBS-FM the new home for News Radio 101.1 WCBS-FM.

The LAST thing we need is another All News station, especially on FM! Didn't really work in Philly with WWDB so why should NYC be the guinea pig on that one!? I am for the "Sunny 92.3" idea. I think would be a TERRIFIC move for Infinity. If they programmed it as the "Sunny" in Philly was before the "Philly's Favorites" positioner, I think it would do very well and maybe grab back some of the disgruntled CBS-FM listeners that don't care for the "newer" tuneage that "Lite" plays. It's clear that this is ALL hypothetical since 92.3 already is ready for the Post-Stern transition. So the ONLY chance of a "Sunny" type station is indeed on 101.1, Jack's current home on the dial. I have to admit that although I really like "BEN" in Philly, I am starting to give Jack some of my TSL. I was a doubter, but with a little time it might be at 'PLJ level in the Arbs!!

I miss the Oldies too, but luckily for me in the suburbs I have them but I wouldn't look for them in NYC unless Clear Channel wants to give up one of their stations to do it...

Re: News Radio 101.1 WCBS-FM (Maybe)

The ONLY way I could see Infinity utilizing the FM-News option would be to make 880-AM the "NEW HOME FOR OLDIES in NYC!" Honestly I am a firm believer that if you give people a reason to listen to music on AM they WILL! Take WMTR for example. In the Morristown book they had a complete turnaround and shot to the top. Now much of that is due to WCBS-FM's demise but also because they are filling a niche that people really seem to enjoy.

2 News stations on AM for Infinity is a bit unnecessary but hey they have both been around for how long? I do highly doubt that they will replace Jack with News programming, especially since they are running a "Sweeper" on Jack that mentions for those that want Traffic/Weather/News to tune into their sister-station WCBS 880. So by doing that, Infinity knows that atleast they will still keep the listeners "in the Infinity Family!" (By the Way...it's a VERY clever Sweeper too!)

I completely agree with everything you said EXCEPT the Lennon thing. Using TV for example there was so MUCH MORE coverage of Lennon and the vigil in Central Park than the fact that it was the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. I could take the flip side of what you said and say that if a station doesn't mention Pearl Harbor that THEY suck too! Lennon was a great song-writer but I could see spotlighting Elvis way before I could see spotlighting Lennon. Just my opinion that I am offering as you did. No hard feelings

and YES LOCAL RADIO SHOULD BE LOCAL!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, this is off topic, but you think Elvis should be spotlighted before Lennon? Huh?? (And I'm from Memphis!) I don't follow that logic....I'm not saying Elvis wasn't important, but Elvis was a singer/actor. Lennon was a singer/guitarist/composer/revolutionary. They both were (and continue to be) huge cultural icons, but Elvis' death wasn't quite as tragic (or violent).

The reason there was so much coverage on Lennon this time is that it's been 25 years, and the media loves anniversaries. It's the 64th anniversary of Pearl Harbor (and that's 12/7, not 12/8) and 64 isn't a magic anniversary number, like 5, 10, 20, 25 or 50 are.

Besides, doesn't every TV and radio news report mention something about Elvis every August 16? They still have thousands or mourners at Graceland for the candlelight vigil every year, just as they gather at Strawberry Fields every December 8.

And they have a sweeper on WCBS 880 telling people who want to listen to some music to switch over to 101.1 Jack. Do you know of any ads for Jack on any other Infinity New York City station?

What they should have done with Jack was to keep the announcers but do the music switch. They could have said "We're JACKing it up at 101.1" Possibly toss in some older material from time from time. Then after a few months just start using the Jack name.

Re: News Radio 101.1 WCBS-FM ...Remember WNWS?

I remember around 1974, WNBC-FM dumped "The Rock Pile" an automated Top 40 format for a national news network. The call letters were changed to WNWS (before the Florida station had them) and they played mostly national news around the clock on FM. Then, I think, the next format was WYNY, "Somewhere between rock and a soft spot."

Now over thirty years later, there is talk of all news on FM again. Why would it work out this time?

They will not change what has been successful for over thirty-five years.

What would I do ???
102.7 flips to a Triple A format making it as close to WNEW's heyday in rock

92.3 Goes AC to go after Lite FM

101.1 returns to oldies with CLASSIC air personalities
