What would you do?

According to the Saga CEO, plans are underway to make changes to improve the ratings of stations shortly. It is the top priority according to his statement. What would you do to WMGX?

They have a nice Web site. It's sad to hear that one of the morning hosts has breast cancer. <P ID="signature">______________

Overhaul the format. Re-evaluate the music and the age (or type) of audience the station is attempting to attract. ELIMINATE the "tired liners" that listeners continue to ignore...which basically make 93.1/WMGX sound very stale.

Add a couple of "surprise elements" from time-to-time---like a guest recording artist or entertainer who's in the area and might be willing to take listener phone calls in exchange for a CD or Concert mention. Actually, an occasional live interview in conjunction with listener phone calls would probably give WMGX a more relatable sound?

Don't just tinker with the morning show. [Tim, Liz and Jamie actually sound good when they're permitted to be themselves]. Pay a little more attention to the other dayparts and evening time slots---to avoid giving listeners a reason to abandon the radio station at 9 or 10AM!

Shall I go on???

no. please stop while you're behind. Liz has been off the show for over a year now. maybe a true, objective listen to the station is long overdue on your part.

My apologies for the error. But I guess YOU'RE 100% ACCURATE when it comes to every radio station and on-air personality in this market?

It must be nice?

An "objective listen" is one thing....but can you HONESTLY ACCEPT "objective criticism?"

There's been a big improvement in the overall sound of the station.{Less liner card & to me there's nothing wrong with talking over the music}.With me I don't like the mix of music. It has gotten better, the " We play whatever",it's still pretty much the same old 'MGX.Maybe it's good enough even though there numbers have slowly gone down. They are the only station in the market with that kind of music. They probobly lost listeners when the listen at work stations didn't have to be mellow anymore. The stations I hear the most in work places or stores are Oldies 100.9 & Frank.Someone mentioned here that "MGX was a huge biller. If that's so why risk a change? What's missing in this market that would be worth the risk?I don't think 'MGX is doing bad enough for a major change.Personally I'd like to see a real "Variety Hits station".Maybe this would be a good thing for "The Bone".It's odd that the Bone doesn't do better. It's the hardest rocker we have. They're pretty low budget now with only one live airshift a day,Variety Hits might be worth the risk for them. Before Frank, did anyone think that a major change like that could be made and do those numbers? They're numbers are going down, but they'll probobly always be near the top.

I think because the opposite is most likey true today, the real risk is keeping the same format and expecting dramatic improvement. I would guess that WMGX has suffered more billing loss than anyone since the market changed a couple of years ago.

apology noted. i'm not always right, but then again, i try not to single
out without making sure i got it right, so i wouldn't know how nice it is.
(in this instance, it was pointed out that your names were off by a year -
and in this instance, for the 2nd time in the past few months)

none of us can honestly ACCEPT any kind of criticism. but to be able to
find a way to make it work to help refine our ability is the hallmark of
any performance driven industry.

IT TAKES A "TRUE PROFESSIONAL" TO ADMIT WHAT YOU JUST WROTE. WHICH IS PROBABLY THE REASON YOUR PERSONALITY & TALENTS ARE ADMIRED IN THIS MARKET?

How about all crap music, all the time? With crap deeeeejaaaaaaays reading crap liners? And as a bonus, all the crap music would be pre-1982?

Just call it 93Frank!

See I had faith in you, Argy. I knew you had constructive criticism under that tough exterior. Do go on. I like it when you share your ideas (really!) instead of pummeling poor Jeff (disclaimer: I don't know Jeff, but he seems like a swell guy, and he posts with his real name, which gives him cohunes).

I, for one, would like to see 'MGX turn up some real variety. How about an increase in currents, a decrease in Jackson Brown (I really hate that guy) and more 80s/90s hits that have been forgotten since Kiss 99.9 went a-packin'? I appreciate that they want to reach women--but it wouldn't hurt to give the station a slightly hotter sound that might draw in a few fringe male listeners.

Another direction, and I'm prepared for flaming, would be to go the route of Boston's The River. Do something real unique-that way, even if they are 5th-they can be proud of doing something no one else in Portland was willing to try. Besides, it might really work, Portland's a funny market.

I just really hope they don't try to imitate Frank-FM, unless of course, they change afternoon guy Ethan's name to Leifier Erickson-Minton. Now that would be hilarious.

Wasn't MGX already playing "all crap music, all the time" before Frank, Spoogie. Wasn't that in it's slogan...Classic Hits and the Best of the record labels indie money. Why would they go back to crap since that is apparently, according to them, what they were trying to do.

Believe it or not...I think Jeff IS AN EXCELLENT BROADCASTER. Maybe a little defensive at times on these boards...but if I were in a similar employment situation, I guess I'd respond in a similar manner?

Just for the record....here's the reason I don't SHARE many of my programming ideas with the regular contributors to this board. I've found that many broadcasters find it easier to "dismiss an idea" instead of listening to it. When you have a few extra minutes, take a 2nd look at some of the earlier posts to this board. There are contributors here who find it very easy to offer a cynical response (some people call them smart a***s) instead of making the effort to consider improving an existing on-air product....or even try something new?

I guess if I want to pitch an idea of mine (programming, advertising, or something similar) to any broadcaster, I'd like to know that I have their attention for at least 3-5 minutes........instead of being "verbally written off" in roughly 30 seconds?
