What would you do?

With the Cotton Bowl on tonight, I had no choice but channel 3 for 9pm news. Boy, is it an inferior product. The main vibe I get with 3's news is that there is a vacuum between the anchor and viewer. There is no energy, no chemistry. Royal Norman is a solid met on a leaky ship.

What would you do to fix channel 3?

I think it needs a top-to-bottom overhaul.

-Imaging. To me, 3's image looks a little out of date. I think, after 30 years and some accessorizing, the circle 3 needs to be axed. I think the image that would make the most sense for 3 is a hybrid of their "Arizona's Family" longtime slogan with some Belo-inspired "Spirit" imagery. To me, the gold standard of news package is KSAZ in the mid-90s. So much can be done with the Arizona state flag. Sadly, KSAZ's experiment in that could not last beyond two years. New graphics, music, and set are needed. 3 needs to shed its image that it acquired in the 90s and this past decade as a fluff-heavy, old-leaning broadcast.
-Format of newscasts. Bring back the title "NewsChannel 3" and make most of your weeknight newscasts two-anchor. One of the things that makes 3 seem distant and robotic is the lack of chemistry between anchors. Fields Moseley should be paired with Patti Kirkpatrick for GEAZ and the 9pm and 10pm newscasts. Better yet, I'd bet Cameron Harper would be willing to jump from the equally leaky S.S. WPTY in Memphis for another round at channel 3. Weather is the station's bright spot, with Royal Norman at chief. Sports is OK as is — I really appreciate their attempt at high school sports coverage (only once in a blue moon does 10 cover high school sports — they did it today!), but it suffers from the same vacuum problem as their newscasts.

I think 3 needs to distinguish itself from its competitors as well with more franchise reporting. They already have 3 On Your Side, but they need more. I've been toying with this concept in my head: a 10:30 newscast M-Th tailored to a different area of the state every night. For instance, Monday could be northern Arizona, Tuesday the Navajo Nation, Wednesday central Arizona (e.g. Yavapai County), and Thursday could be targeted at the White Mountains. Another area that would be interesting for a weekly roundup is Pinal County. KTVK could pick up where little KCAB left off with a weekly newscast focused at this fast-growing area and issues specific to towns like Florence, Coolidge, CG, etc. You build a viewership from these small areas and make them more loyal 3 viewers — it's a sort of WNEP-esque approach to outlying areas. Friday would remain the Varsity Zone show.

What do YOU think needs to be fixed about 3, and how would you go about doing it?

I still think (in my opinion) that 3 has a superior product than 10 (or even 12). 10 is a train wreck waiting to happen. Their graphics are not friendly to the eye (then again, they are standard FOX O&O news graphics) and they seem to trying to add more opinion pieces (the Roger Ailes influence) to what should be a hard newscast. The only things 10 has going for them is their FOX lead-in and the longevity of its anchor team, which has kept viewers tuned in since they're familiar with "Hook and Lake."

I'm not saying 3 is perfect, but they need to market themselves better (it seems like all the marketing money go towards GMAZ).

The production and talent cost of a 1030pm cast is not worth the tiny ratings they would get. The general public watches Leno or Letterman at that time.

And also, about Cameron Harper...unless you know him, how do you know he would want to come back to Phoenix? ;)

I watch the 9PM news on 3 several times per week and actually prefer it to the other stations. They seem to focus more on stories of local interest and don't beat you over the head with their location (hi 12) or their "won't waste your time" (hi 5). 10 seems to repeat their stories all day long after Ron Hoon does the morning show so watching them is largely a repeat. I've never been a fan of 12 due primarily to their "heavy" presentation.

The recent change in anchors at 3 has gone effortlessly and, although not perfect, Fields and Cary do an acceptable job (as well as the field reporters). Because I am not in the business I probably have a higher tolerance for the lack of frills that most news departments use to amp up their presentations. Low-key with emphasis on content is fine by me.

The only thing that does drive me wild occasionally on 3 is their bumper music volume. At time it comes in high enough to blow me out of my recliner. That is not acceptable and has made me change the channel a time or two.

@OneHorseTown: 6:30 would also be acceptable. Only 5 offers any news at that slot, and it would still be compelling. I said that about Cameron Harper mostly to jab at the Memphis trainwreck that is WPTY/WLMT.

@landtuna: Going back to 10 the next night is such a different story. To me 10 has overdone the news since about 1996, but it's gotten worse over the past few months. New, "youthful" VO. A significant downgrade that I think leaves them without a certified met on staff. Increased reliance on national syndicated segments. I'm losing my interest in 10, and the description of a "trainwreck waiting to happen" is more and more accurate.

FOX Ten is not watchable most times... They are indeed relying too heavily on the "Rupert Murdoch make Democrats look bad" frame of reference.(-

3TV KTVK holds my interest more than its competitors. Three has handled their changing news anchors well. They kick doing local AZ stories more than their competition.

I like KPHO 5 doing their local expose Sheriff Joe and his crapola machine... Lots of lawsuits aimed at Arpaio and his henchmen.

Connie Cola does great on Ch. 15 early mornings.

12 and 10 are not acceptable... IMHO

I agree with this. Overall, I believe ABC15 has come a long way.

Well, my only experience with Cameron Harper with in Dallas, where he was involved in the 11 News trainwreck. Apparently, his tenured co-anchor, Midge Hill, thought very highly of herself and not very highly of Cameron. So, that led to obvious on-air tension between the two.

As for 3 TV, I actually like their lower-key approach to the news. 10 is pretty much unwatchable for me -- particularly since Jayme King is no longer there. I do think they need to solidify their late night news team. Is it going to be Moseley/Pena at 9pm and 10pm or something else?
