Whatever happend to.....

Cleveland Wheeler. I used to listen to him on WGOW when they were the only game in town and he played progressive rock at night. Odd, but I remember when he left and once again, everything changed and GOW went back to doing what every top 40 station does at night..then this maniac called Mojo Man replaces Cleveland. That was bizarre. About four months later, I get transfered to Jacksonville Florida and there is Cleveland Wheeler on the BIG APE!

I know he was in Tampa for a long time but then last year my brother told me he showed up sitting in for Luther!!~ Then all of a sudden, he is on a new oldies station and gone as quick as he came.

Not to offend anyone, but is there some law in radio against being exceptional because the good ones go fast and the medicore ones are all over the place.

These days, the exceptional talent go first 'cuse they cost more.

Don't know if it was the same guy or not, but I remember a guy by the name of "Charlie Wheeler", who worked at WOKI for a short period of time back during the Summer of '85 around the same time Animal was there.

I remember both Charlie Wheeler, and Animal both left around the same time and went back to Z-100 (WJZR) in Charlotte.

Cleveland Wheeler is still in Tampa. I think he just gave up a PD title to concentrate on his morning show. He never worked at WOKI.

Ahh, the Mojo Man...now there was a piece of work that would make any manager glad there's an automation in house.

You are thinking of Mason Dixon who was Cleveland Wheeler's PD on Q105 in Tampa during the '80s. It is Mason Dixon who is still in Tampa and recently was stripped of his PD title to concentrate on his morning show.

Cleveland Wheeler was in Tampa from 1978 through 1990 so there is no way he could have been at WOKI in 1985.

Cleveland Wheeler actually returned to Chattanooga for a short stint last year. He was hired as PD and also did an airshift at classic hits WUUS 97.3 & 99.3 (www.wuusradio.com). When Clear Channel divested and sold that station last year, a group called 3 Daughters Media bought it and debuted the classic hits format and WUUS call letters. Wheeler helped sign it on last year, but I think there was a falling out and he left the station after only a few months. WUUS is still doing the classic hits format, but I'm not sure where Cleveland Wheeler went when he left earlier this year. I do know that he also worked for a while on XM's 60's channel a couple of years back.

I have googled until I ran out of google... looks like Cleveland signed on with XM as one of the first on the original team of start-up PDs at XM and designed that channel for them. I guess that is done with the merger. Can't seem to find a current mention of he or terry McKeever anywhere but I guess with lay-offs, freezes, and cuts in salaries, opportunities for a guy like that aren't very plentiful. Radio's loss.

I tell you who would know...Bill Burkett, he keeps in touch with Cleveland. I most recently worked with Bill and he would mention what he was doing, of course sometimes I would ask, I seem to remember Bill mentioning that he was going to put his focus on working with animals I want to say dogs, I knew he had a love for dogs. He was having trouble finding radio work that paid decent for a veteran personality. He also told me he and the wife moved, I want to say Oklahoma City, but don't quote me on that. Bill has a lot of great stories and I may be crossing wires on the town or city. Maybe Bill will see this and be able to inform.
