Whatever happened to…?

The Indie 103.1 stream? Years after the terrestrial station ended, Entravision kept the stream going, until they just randomly stopped. I know it’s been awhile. I’m curious how an Indie 103.1 would do in today’s radio landscape?

Given that streaming is more of a thing, music fans that would have listened to the late Indie 103.1 would probably be streaming KCRW's Eclectic 24. That is, if they decide to listen to a radio station.

Maybe also out-of-market choices like KEXP. But there are also some that would like to keep it local and listen to KXLU.

My opinion is that I don't think a stream like that would work. They would need ads to support it. And it's not a mass appeal format. I know you probably miss indie but it's not
Coming back anytime soon.

No but all of the talk of apparently no one listening to kroq and the predicted death of the station made me sad like when indie died

Actually, a few of the original station DJs still run The Independent FM, an internet stream that still operates to this day. There's even a few of the original shows, like Passport Approved and Breakfast with the Smiths.

Entravision kept the stream up for a while, but I'm sure the suits of a Spanish radio broadcaster asked the obvious question, "Why are we running an indie rock station?"

Last time I was in the US around 2015, I visited the Entravision LA offices. While being shown around, I was shown a small studio that was locked with the lights out. I was told that it was the Indie 1031 studio that was totally automated. That was about 3 months after it went online only.

I’ll try to find the link somewhere. I remember awhile back one of the former Indie DJs said they were in talks with another radio group in town to bring the old format to their frequency, after 103.1 flipped. I’ve always wondered which group that was and why it fell apart?

Audacy's stock is at .65 today. Teetering on the edge of bankruptcy nearly 1.8 billion in debt. David Field the man that destroyed CBS Radio single handedly. How sad is that?????

I think you're greatly overstating the situation. The $1.8 billion debt is still less than iHeart debt after bankruptcy. CBS still owns a piece of Audacy as part of their Reverse Morris Trust. We're in a very deep advertising recession right now. Any company that makes money from advertising is hurting.

Do you think we’ll see a repeat of 2008-09 in 2022-23?

Which means bankruptcy is more likely than previously. I am pretty sure CBS relies significantly on advertising revenue too, thus making them less likely to step in and save the day when the losses start to pile up.

The first thing they teach you in finance in business school is "never use your own money if you can make more with someone else's".

CBS was already destroyed when it was sold. Huge dependency on expensive, zero growth AM stations. Entercom's mistake was thinking there was an upside when there was not.

And Entercom's acquisitions are approved by the whole board of directors, not just the CEO.

Some things are worse: we have near 10% inflation, the worst in over 40 years combined with a contracting economy.

I don't know. I bought a lot of Sirius stock when it was trading at 2 cents. Of course that's more of a subscription based business model. But Audacy is transitioning towards that as well.

So my expectation is we'll see a reverse stock split at some point in order to get the price above a dollar. It's just a matter of when.

But at the same time, there's historically low unemployment, and a lot of activity in certain businesses. Just not radio.

Plus the economy situation isn't restricted to the US. It's cost several leaders of other countries their jobs already.
