That allocation was a victim of the times, and the increasing preference of country music listeners to hear their favorites on FM. The allocation was to Belmont, NC. Through some paperwork shuffling, Pride's group was able to hold onto the CP for about 10 years before allowing it to expire.
The outlook for AM's in this area was rather bleak...1480, 1150 and 1060 were off the air, Big WAYS was gone and WSOC-AM was reduced to simulcast, and many other AM operations were teetering on bankruptcy. Pride just cut his losses and didn't seek another extension.
With that CP no longer impeding, a group in Eden, NC filed for 830 kHz with 10 KW day and night and put it on the air in the mid 80's. Later, it moved to Kernersville, NC and upped the daytime to 50 KW, forever blocking the possibiblty of 820 ever getting on-air in the Charlotte area.
