Whatever happened to Benny Ray?

He used to work late nites/overnites at WSM in the '80s. I think he also went on to be a host on the short-lived "Music Country" satellite radio service of that era. He replaced Chuck Morgan, whom, I believe, was also a former WSM staffer.

Do you mean Denny Ray? Denny was on the evening shift on WSM in the early to mid 90's and was always very cool about playing requests for me back when they were about the only station playing any pre Garth Brooks music. Denny was replaced by Eddie Stubbs about the same time that WSM-AM went to all Country classics. I'm not sure where he went after that, I have asked before on other message boards and by emailing WSM-AM

no i think he does mean benny ray (benney shipley real name as i recall)..i have a source that probabaly knows..if he'll answer the page..lol

Could be wrong...but don't remember Denny Ray working evening shift. Did work mid-days at for a while. Haven't heard from him in years. Do seen Benny a couple of times a year and he was fine last time I saw him.

What do you mean "working on the Crook and Chase" show. Is he a side kick, writer, voice guy or what.
I don't know about that show. Is it carried here and if so when?

i believe that show is on the RFD network..i don't think nashville has it..at least it's not on my cable up here in green wave country

Bennie is involved with producing the Crook & Chase radio program. He's doing well. Saw him just yesterday, as I do frequently. He is my neighbor.

The Crook & Chase Countdown, as I believe it is called, was among the winners at the recent Nashville AIR Awards.

Bennie Ray, Denny Ray, and Chuck Morgan are all WSM veterans. During the '70s and '80s, Bennie was often heard on SM95 (the WSM-FM soft rock format in those days) before moving to WSM-AM in the early '80s. From 1982 on, he was an on-air/production/programming person for WSM's Music Country Network.

Chuck did nights at WSM, and the success of his overnight show (following in the footsteps of Hairl Hensley, Ralph Emery, and all the others who had worked nights over the years for the station) led the company to launch the Music Country Network in 1982 with Chuck as its primary host. Chuck left in '83 to join the Texas Rangers baseball team (as a stadium announcer, not a player :)). Charlie Douglas (from WWL New Orleans) took his place on the air and ran the network's programming until it ended in 1988.

Denny Ray joined the station in the late '80s and worked in various capacities and on various shifts. He did do nights for quite a while. As I recall (and my memories get fuzzier all the time), when he left evenings, Eddie Stubbs took that shift over, and still holds it. I should remember all that better (I was PD of the station at the time), but I've slept since then.

All useless information, but there you go...

RFD TV is on COMCAST. It is on the digital tier on Channel 135. You have to subscribe to Comcast Digital Package in order to recieve it. I live in Rutherford County and I believe all the Comcast customers in Middle TN recieve this station if they subscribe to the digital package.

Kyle --

Yet it seems like only recently you were at WMTS and on your way to WSM around the time the FM flipped to country.

You may (or may not) recall me from MSTU (as well as across town at WGNS). I taught a class in Dr. Kimbrell's communications department and if I remember correctly, you had another class in the same room just before mine began.

Chuck Morgan still voices many of the Texas Rangers spots. Every time I hear his voice for the Rangers, I still think of waking up to him on the clock radio (tuned to WSM) every morning at 4:15 so I could get to WGNS in time to sign it on at 5.

RFD TV is on COMCAST. well..i do have the digital tier in the living room on the main tv..but i never watch that tv..in fact i watch very little comcast at all pretty much football, discovery, a&e....i only have it for the internet ..my taste toward tv are hopelessly stuck in the era i grew up in 1955 to 1975 or so...plenty of those shows on hulu, yahoo tv, and others..ive never watched a reality show,or whatever that singing show is with simon cowell..etc..yes i'm quite insane..much prefer mchales navy, .... lol

Hi Bob! Yes, I do remember you, and yes, it does seem like only yesterday. Those were great days. Email me sometime and let's catch up!

I spoke with Chuck Morgan last summer. His phone number is on the Rangers web page. He was between meetings and we only spoke a couple of minutes but he seems to be doing great in the sales department.

I'm still confused about the Crook & Chase thing. Delta posted the show is on cable on the RFD network. Do they still have a syndicated radio show on weekends? Does anyone here carry it?
