Whatever Happened to Mark McCain

Does anybody know whatever happened to Mark McCain, former morning guy on 96ROCK? He also worked at WAYS/Charlotte, WRJZ/Knoxville, WFOM/Marietta, WPPI/Carrollton and KSHE/St. Louis. He was from the Atlanta area.

Add to that list MusicRadio WALR/104.7 as the afternoon drive guy. In fact, McCain was the last man out the door when the Smithgalls canned everybody and automated the station in mid-1990.

Here's what Mark's up to these days:

He's been on eagle106.7 for a while. I've often wondered/though that Steve Mitchell in the afternoons on eagle was the other half of the wrecking crew. I remember hating it when they announced they were leaving ATL to go to New Orleans.

For those in Atlanta long enough to remember, Mark McCain was an unbelieveable talent in the early-mid 80s at 96rock. With the possible exception of Ross Brittain or Gary Mckee, he was Atlanta's first FM superstar. (I personally think he was the best.) He just made listening to z93 or 94Q seem very uncool and unhip - even though they were all playing the same Huey Lewis crap. Great pipes, great comic bits, great timing - nobody could intro a song like he could, even without a ramp. McCain was extrememly cool - the kind of guy who made you want to get into album rock radio.
But it just goes to show that if you leave town and get forgotten, its tough to come back. And he failed to follow the first law of perfomer success: if you're going to come back into the same market you left, dont come back in a lesser role. In other words, coming back to do PM drive at 104.7 was a poor decision, IMO. He could have waited 6 months and been Z93's morning guy when they went classic rock, for example. And now, 15 years later, he's doing fill-ins at a country station where he doesnt know George Strait from George Steinbrenner. Kind of sad for those of us who remember his greatness, but I hope he does well all the same.

And before that, he was a great Top 40 talent at Big WAYS in Charlotte, hired by none other than Scott Slade (then PD at WAYS) to do middays. He jumped from little 500-watt AM WPPI in Carrollton to Big WAYS in 1976.

Several months back, he and Steve Mitchell filled in for Rhubarb's morning show playing some of their old bits from 96 rock. They had a great time. It was also wonderful to hear them again together. They even joked about doing it again.

If you remember, when he returned from St Louis, he worked for Dallas Tarkenton and son, Chuck, at Magic 96.7 in Newnan. He was there 6-9 months.

He's currently Part-time at Eagle 106.7 (WYAY). I imagine he's at the station more than he is as a weekend mobile warrior.
