Whatever Happened To?

Whatever happened to Rick Dees and the Weekly Top 40 on FM100? I used to listen to him there in Memphis all the time when I was growing up. He still plays across the country (including here in Atlanta where I live) and he now has a Hot AC version of his countdown (perfect fit for FM100's format). I know for years he was on from 8pm-12am on Sunday nights. I wonder why they stopped playing him? Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Rick used to work for FM100 and got fired for the "Disco Duck" song? If I am correct, FM100 still plays Casey Kasem's AT20 on Sunday mornings from 8am-11am and AT40 with Ryan Seacrest on Q107.5 but I don't recall the times on Q.

If I just keep my mouth shut for about 10 minutes, someone else will set the record straight, but here goes... At the time Rick's Disco Duck was a hit, Rick was doing mornings and held the title of Program Director at WMPS (680 AM). The suits at Plough Broadcasting were very sensitive to the situation, and while Rick was not allowed to play the song himself, he supposedly asked one of the other jocks to play it (mind you, it was the number one song in the US). This led to his dismissal, and 680 never recovered.
Rick waited out his non-compete, hopped across town to WHBQ, and the rest of his Memphis history is well documented at John Long's website, oidar.com.
You would think I would know why he's not on FM100 anymore, but I don't have a clue. My best speculation is that, at the time he was dropped, he was too "Top40", and didn't offer an alternative "AC" version. Or maybe two countdowns were deemed to be too many.
