Whatever Happened To........

I have a few memories from the late 60’s through the 80’s:

Grew up with Wes Hopkins on WCOL…remember the voting for your favorite hits in the evening on the Hitline: “Call Capital 8-62-43” (228-6243 for you youngsters).

Switched over to Stereo 98 in the early 70’s. Used to call E. Karl on his nightly show. Remember WNCI at the Ohio State Fair? They had a studio by the Coliseum.

Other names from WNCI in the 70’s: Charlie Pickard, Mike Metzger, Dave Anthony, Damon Sheridan, Easy Ed Hayward overnights.

Moved on in mid 70’s and discovered WCOL-FM – Stereo Rock 92. Mike Perkins (Mike and Mary mornings), Neal Martin, Terry Wilson (later at WBBY, Magic 99.7 and CD101), Bill Pugh (later at Q-FM-96), Jason Hunter (Michael Luzack - 92X)

Upon WCOL-FM’s demise, began listening to Q-FM-96: Tom Teuber, John Fisher (John and Fran mornings), Beth Kepple, Munch the Morning Madman (Mark Bishop), Breakfast Club from Bernies Bagels downtown,

I know Munch is still on the air in Cleveland and John Fisher in the state of Washington but not sure if others are still in the business. Used to hear Neil Martin (Shapiro) PA at the Chill and Crew games years ago and Terry Wilson on the Waterbeds and Stuff commercials.

Would be cool to hear some old air checks from those days…

Updates on what I have:

John Fraim living in Hocking Hills region and writes a periodic column for the Logan newspaper. He is now in his 80's.

Johnny Dollar is retired in Florida in Tampa area.

Same for Dave Logan except on Pine Island.

Jack Evans does a weekend airshift in the Tampa market on a country station WQYK

Jack Stewart can be heard locally doing Straders spots. Don't know what else he is up to.

Dale Ulmer passed away earlier this year. He was no longer in broadcasting.

Len Anthony passed away a few years ago in the Atlanta area where he last wore headphones.

Diane Townsley hosts a web based oldies show called a Date with Diane.

Jockey Joe Passed away in the 80's from either kidney or liver failure. He last hosted in the Findlay market.

Dave Logan WTVN MidDays
Bill Smith WTVN Evenings
Logan-- possibly the Dave Logan covering sports on KOA 850 AM, in the Denver market?
Smith-- the Bill Smith of the old Doubleday Broadcasting powerhouse in the 60's & 70's?
The Bill Smith I knew spent a few years as sales mgr, then general mgr at Doubleday affiliate KDEF Radio in Albuquerque.

I went to high school with Jockey Joe Gallagher. Gallagher was his mother's maiden name. His actual last name was Ucker. He was a real nice guy. He had a studio set up in his mom's house, one that broadcast about a couple hundred feet. I used to sit on the roof of the house with binoculars and tried to do a play-by-play of the Columbus Bucks minor league football team, who played their home games at Bishop Hartley High School, our alma mater. Joe would record the games on a reel-to-reel set.

He took me up to the WBBY studios once, and I sat with him while he did his shift. Good guy, good times spent with him.

OK. I remembered a few things more back from those 1960s and 1970s Columbus radio daze (as I grew up in central OH, listening to the great radio on the airwaves back then). Surely makes me wonder where they all are now::

- WTVN-FM was a jazz station in the mid-60s, and played jazz afternoons through late night. Then, it simulcasted with WTVN-AM, carrying overnights and John Fraim's morning show, too.

- Dave Anthony, Bob North, and E. Karl were all on WTVN-FM as jazz, around 1967, I believe, and then they all ended up working at WNCI.

- WTVN-FM changed to WBUK-FM in 1968 or so, and played "pop" music in mono. John LaPalla was on the station then. He was PD, if I remember correctly. I think E. Karl did 6-10P, and Dave Anthony did 10-2A (as they did when it was jazz). Kenny Stone may have worked there, too, but he moved on to WCOL-FM when it went "progressive rock" after WNCI made its move in 1969.

- Bill Blinn was an overnighter on WTVN-AM back then and was really funny and talented. Dave Logan did middays and Bob Connors did afternoons. Jim Loshe did the "Loshe Lounge" evening show (6-10P maybe) and he actually played an in-studio piano and sang songs on his show, taking requests. Johnny Dollar was PD, and Gene DeAngelo was GM.

- E. Karl left WBUK-FM in 1969 and started a WNCI show called "The Incredible Progressive Rock Circus" from 8-10P. WNCI was a mono FM - like all others back then - and it would shut down the taped syndicated "Sounds Of Today" show from CBS (Andy Williams, Eydie Gorme, etc.) so rock music from the just-started Woodstock era could be played for two hours. The station just went off the air at 10P or midnight then, but I'm not sure which hour. Bob North also had a jazz show called "Midnight Sunshine," if I remember correctly.

- WNCI was up at the WRFD studios back then, in Powell, at Nationwide's Green Meadows training center. The studios were huge (I took a tour) because they used to accomodate studio orchestras in the 1950s. That's when Spook Beckman was at WRFD, and I think it was Ed Johnson who did a WRFD syndicated morning "farm report" morning show at the station. Something like that.

- Brian McIntyre was the PD of WCOL-AM when FM stations started taking their toll on WCOL. He rode the station down admirably as FM took over, after finally going stereo in 1970 and then learning the secrets of Arbitron ratings.

- WBNS-AM was also trying to stay "pop" along with WTVN-FM back then, but the FM movement was too powerful when it came to rock and Top 40. WBNS-FM was a syndicated "beautiful music" station then - maybe Schulke - and was taped programming. I think WBNS-AM finally just started talking and gave up playing music.

- After Dave Anthony on WNCI died of throat cancer in the mid-70s or so, Bob Nunnally came in from Marion, I believe, and replaced Anthony. Nunnally later worked mornings at Sunny 95, and then moved to TV4, where he still is today, as a weather person.

- When E. Karl was news director at WNCI, he worked with a reporter - Dan Line - who was killed at a convenience store around 1979 or so. Karl was a DJ, then news director, then PD of WNCI. And, as mentioned above, I think he was part of that four-person morning show called "The Morning Paper. I think the players were Charlie Pickard, E. Karl, a news reporter, and a traffic reporter who was actually a Columbus police officer ... somthing like Isseldyke. Karl left WNCI in 1979 or so when Scripps-Howard hired him in Cleveland.

- Other names I remember and wonder where they are: Jay Michaels, Sean McKay, Jim Irwin, and Rick Minerd.

Sean McKay lives here in Dayton and has his own business...

I listened to Stereo Rock 92 in the mid 70s but unfortunately don't recall the djs. Each night I'd fall asleep listening to their music.
I then switched to Q-FM like everyone else. John Fisher is currently in Seattle, Washington, KMTT. He went to Chicago after leaving Columbus and replaced by Pat Still. Pat left and is now in Sacramento, KNCI. John came back for a couple more years and left once more. Not sure if the second departure took him to the west coast or not. I think he may have headed back to Chicago before heading west.
It originally was John and Wags in the morning and Fran Kovak (?) was the news person. I believe she left to locally pursue a law degree. I have not heard what ever happened to her. She was replaced by J J Jeffries and she was around until the early 90s, I believe. She was replaced by Kristie Kemper who is still there. I think J J lived downtown. I worked downtown in the mid 80s and she was friends with a fellow co-worker. At times, we'd see her walking home around lunch time. Not sure what happened to her.

In the 80s, SUNY 95 had a morning team of John and Jane. Jane was, of course, Jane London. But John.....? Can't remember his name. I just recall it was a big deal when he left the program. I think he just got burnt out. There was another guy on the program but, again, can't recall his name either. Anyone remember?
I do recall that Bob Nunnally did the morning weather for a while prior to getting the afternoon broadcast spot.

CMHRADIOFAN had it right. Bob Simpson was the morning guy I (didn't) remember. Checking LinkedIn, he was there from 1984 to 1995. I think the John and Jane stuck in my mind because, I believe, Jane London did a brief stint on 610 with someone named John doing drive time, 3-6, mid to late 90s. Maybe John Corby before he went on his own?
And I remember John Symons doing the Love Song gig on WSNY early 90s. Not sure how long his program ran. You can find him on Facebook.

That was John Lane.

Is John Lane the same as the "John L" who was on WNCI in the 70s?

Does anyone recall what happened to Chuck Douglas? He doesn't update his website...
I have it on good authority that he is too busy trying to feed the kids to concentrate on things that don't make money. It's easier to stay in touch on the FB page than to update the website.

Actually, Chuck, I figured that was the case, and I hope things will go your way soon.

I may be one of the few people on the net who have never been to FB, and I do not plan to do so either, so perhaps trolling along this site I will find out any good news from you in the future.

Back when WOSU-TV aired tape delayed OSU football games, Jeff Logan was paired with a play-by-play guy whose first name was Jack (I think). Does anyone recall his last name?

The kind of things that wander into your mind when you fail to get to sleep at night.
