What's a good format change for WFNX 101.7 on July 23

This should get some responses. Keep in mind there are two variables.

a) What people here would like to hear, or think others will like to hear

b) What will make Clear Channel the most money.

Care to guess which variable CC will factor in?

--Simulcast or move of Talk 1200 (cons. talk). Maybe put something else on the 1200--
prog. talk? Spanish? I might like this, CC might like this.

--Some are saying maybe a simulcast of WSRS 96.1 or something similar. Go after WMJX?

--The other options include Spanish-language programming of some sort, and some on this
board would like CHR-Urban/black oriented (BUT that would take listeners away from
their Kiss and Jam'n stations)

--El Cheapo format like Mike. No DJs, variety hits. Can make money, ka-ching!

What would I like? maybe a migration of Talk 1200.
What will CC do? Could be Spanish, cons talk, variety hits, AC...whatever they think will make
the most money. (The sudden "loss" of Miller, Schultz, and Hartmann by WWZN makes you
wonder...would anyone be surprised if maybe Rush, Katz, Severin, et al wind up on 101.7
and the prog talkers are given a shot on 1200? Didn't work before but bigger signal now
or at least closer to Boston--and points due east toward Boston at night)

I won't make any predictions other than my hunch above. (And while something like
"kinda like what WFNX did before" or "jazz, blues etc." might be interesting would they bring
in the bucks? THAT is what CC is concerned with. $14.6M isn't chump change.)

If they do plan to change to (Talk) like most of you are guessing. It's all good, because they will be up against 96.9

If they plan that

They should put "Mia" on both 1430am, and 1200am. Keep "Mia" as it is, which airs (Spanish HOT AC/CHR)

Isn't FNX's signal a little too weak for a conservative talk format, whose listeners are mostly in the suburbs? I think a Spanish or Urban AC would do best here, considering where it's signal best reaches.

It's going to be a simulcast of Talk 1200. I'll bet on it. They're investing money in that station, and aren't going to let it sit there only on 1200, especially with its lack of night signal in the city.

101.7 gives it an FM presence and most importantly, building penetration in the city itself. Sure 101.7 is a class A directional signal, but it puts a 70+dBu signal into all of Boston. That gets them inside any 99% of buildings, plus portable radios and "walkman" style or whatever they're called now. Things with earbuds. 1200 reaches the western suburbs okay, it's the signal inside the city that they want. Conservative talk may have listeners that live in the burbs, but a lot of them work and/or do things in the city itself. You can't hear 1200 in the tunnels, which is a lot of the city now! 101.7 is on the tunnel repeater system. If you commute in or through Boston, you spend a lot of time in a tunnel.

On the financial side, it doesn't cost them any more to run 1200/101.7 than 1200 alone, except the tower rent and electric bill (which is small at their TPO) and the benefits will be more listeners and higher ad rates. The only hires might be extra sales people to sell more spots. Everything else is in place, from air staff to promotions and any other support staff.

Urban AC would cost money to operate, as an airstaff, promotions staff and sales staff would have to be put in place. Mia 1430 won't generate the cash and publicity that "Talk 101.7/1200" would, because if you're not Spanish speaking, you don't care.

Plus - if I understand correctly, MIA 1430 is syndicated/VT'd out of Miami...so other than electricity for the stick, not much in the way of direct cost to the Boston operation.

It could happen but keep in mind that Boston is the only city, other than Philly, in the top 10 that doesnt have an FM Spanish music, Tropical, or Regional Mexican station in the Top 15.

I can't believe I agree with you Lauro, but Mia is my guess too. Urban AC isn't going to happen.

like some of you are saying here, I agree. Either Urban AC, or Spanish (Mia 1430am>put them on 101.7)
