What's a typical commission rate?

I know that's a tough question, but what does an average AE get in commission? What's the rate? Is there a scale?

A number of factors come into play... is it coming through an ageny or is it direct? Additionally, most stations offer an extra percentage point or two for new business. And I've heard of stations giving incentives if the AE's use broad dayparts or run a certain percentage of the schedule outside the 6A-7P window. I hear Clear Channel offers incentives for selling 30's, too. And some friends have gotten higher commission rates at lower-rated stations since their rates were so low to begin with.

This is how it breaks down where I work. Southern part of the state...
Local 18% Agency 12% and New business and NTR as well as NON-Spot 20%
Every company is different, but the previous reply is up to speed, meaning, most company's are within the 1-2% margine.
Hope this helps

Thanks

I'm curious as to what a sales person might make at a small station in a largee market. The station may bill around 300K per year.

A friend of mine works at a very small (independently owned) station in my market. He receives a salary plus 18% comm. Note: This is NOT a draw. :)
Hope this helps!

As a rule, the bigger the market the lower the commission rate on agency business. I'm in a top 20 market and the range is about 7%-10% on agency biz, although most stations/groups are willing to pay 18%-20% for direct and non-spot.
