What's Causing My Internet Connection To Drop?

For the past month now, my Charter connection has been dropping off and on. The modem I was using went out last night, after it reset itself. You heard right. Had the modem replaced this morning and the drop issue is still happening some. What can I do to fix this issue? Charter is coming back tomorrow to help me nail this one in the coffin. Would bug Apple again but they would tell me the problem is with Charter. Called them once, when the issue started happening and that's what they told me. We checked things out and on my end and theirs things were fine and dandy.

Since March, Charter has been doing some work in this area anyway. I'm wondering if they're still putting the finishing touches on this and it could be the cause of my drop issue? Just curious.

Maybe something is being reset up the line, and you are being assigned a new IP address each time. That happens to me on occasion with my CenturyLink DSL service. I have to reboot the modem in order to get things working again. I guess I'll have to check into getting a permanent IP address for a few extra bucks.

Hmmmmm.....I have the same ISP as you and I've never had that problem. Could it be the circuits in or near your apartment are being worked on more regularly than my older, single home neighborhood?

That's a distinct probability. When I first signed up with them a few months ago, I couldn't get any higher speed than about 3 Mb/s. Now, I get over 5 Mb/s - almost usable for streaming video.

To the OP: Your ISP should be aware of multiple line failures in the same feeders serving your home if there is a common problem. Certainly "work being done on the line" might contribute to interruptions of service. You didn't specify if it was a DSL or other type of service. If DSL it would indicate a phone line problem. If other (cable or fiber) it should have affected others sharing the same lines.

Oops! Before I lose this connection again, I'm with Charter Cable. My modem connects directly to my Apple Computer. This issue has been ongoing since March. The tech people are coming back tomorrow to help me nail this issue in the coffin. Hope my computer isn't to blame. Wanted call Apple but that would be pointless. They would tell me the issue is with Charter.

P.S. I'm using the cheapest Internet connection Charter has to offer.

You're connecting your computer directly to the internet? Don't ever do that. I can't emphasize that enough. Get a router between your machine and the modem. Not only will you be able to connect more than one machine, should you desire to do so, you'd be more secure since the router has a firewall built in. The firewall will block all traffic not originated by you.

Apple and Linux computers are more secure (by several orders of magnitude) than Windows boxes, but they can still be compromised. Even if you're not compromised, your machine can slow down from all the hacker-bots trying to log in (believe me, it WILL happen!). If you were running Windows, your machine would be toast in very short order.

A decent router will set you back about $40-50. They're worth every penny. And, you'll be able to connect more than one machine, and have WiFi as well. ;D

Thanks for the tip.

May take you up on the offer.

And yes I use an Ethernet line.

It runs from the Computer to the Modem.

My line running from the modem to the outside was replaced today. Hope this fixed my issue. If it didn't, plan pursuing every avenue I can, till it's fixed. Thanks to all that tried to help me.

I had the same problem...cured it by dumping Charter and going AT&T, which was cheaper too. Check Consumers Reports...Charter ranks last for cable service nationwide.

Those of us who live in "Podunkville" don't always have much choice of vendors.

I live in Market #15 and still have only two choices. Cox Cable (which I had for two years and finally discontinued due to unannounced outages and two whole weekends of outage without any feedback or compensation) and CenturyLink DSL (which has had one 20 minute outage of which I am aware and is cheaper than cable).

Still, not much choice.

Here in Selma we have AT&T DSL Internet.

Was with them but had many issues and dumped them.

We also have Charter Internet.

Not too much better but I'm going to tough it out with them. :(

Our choices here are limited too.
