The big checks, our GM would go collect instead having them mailed. I would have people call and say, hey, it's been months and he never paid me! Gimme a break!

Karla Smithhart Yates was a fine lady who stood by her husband through some very difficult times. She was known and loved by a lot of people in the Lufkin area. Stephen and their two daughters are in my prayers.
 
Good thing one can go back and look up ratings... Think your husband actually ran the numbers down. Whomever it was that came in after him who did you say Robby someone, well they needed luck and a prayer. Ratings were up (Not much) but were coming up the last two ratings periods before KJCS went off the air. People will do ANYTHING to make themselves look good... Jesus.
 
Sorry to hear about Karla... She was a really Nice Lady... and like someone said eralier... stood by Stephen... All the Way.
 
Bottom line folks...

4 things in the following order of importance: the day the Vance family stole KJCS from Rucker & Hill- the day KYKS went country, KYKS new tower and KJCS downgrade-it was all downhill for KJCS. If you look back at ratings from pre 1990-KJCS was a real force with Bill Scuhltz etc. All the factors listed above are fact and non disputable.

The Outlaw country 12 in a row was the last best attempt at knocking off KYKS under the Paul Riann regime...with Danny Merrell, Johnny Walker, Jay Kelly and Jack Dalton and gave KYKS a run for the money and then de-regulation. After that the gravehad already been dug.

Anything after that was a losing cause. No disrespect-the death warrant had already been signed.

Real shame and JC Stallings RIP is still rolling in his grave.
 
You are right about almost everythinig. It's not exactly true to say the Vance family 'stole" KJCS FM and KEEE AM from Rucker and Hill.

I was there when that sale was made in 1987, and I can testify that the Vances paid at least several million dollars for those two stations. They just made R&H an offer they couldn't refuse. Both stations were solidly in the black with strong revenues, so R&H decided to take the money and run.

I do agree though that under Vance management the decline started immediately. KJCS had an award winning news operation under my direction, but the Vances fired me to cut their expenses before the end of the year.

You are correct "stole" probably a strong word..how about "default". The Vance name to this day cannot be mentioned in Robert Hill's presence. Regardless of the circumstances of the sale-The Vance family "ruined" KJCS.

Even IF the legendary K-J-C-S calls were resurrected, the station would never become the powerhouse of the 70's and 80's due simply to it's downgrade of signal.

All that said...need to give a condolences to the Yates family and sudden death of Karla Yates. Thoughts go out to her girls. Karla was the glue that held the Yates stations together in recent years.

I was referring to Stephen Yate's trouble with the law and consequently his license with the FCC having to be in Karla Yates name, or has he found a new proxy?

Oh. That. I don't know the answer, but I'm sure the FCC has provisions that cover circumstances like these. I'm betting Stephen has filed the appropriate paperwork to designate a new proxy.
 
It's being simulcast throught Stephen Yates radio station he has ESPN 1260 am as one of his employees is rumored to be spreading .By the way the other station he has been using KZXL 96.3 fm (and i use the term literally) he still controls and won't give back. He has never paid the owner a dime for it since he signed the LMA contract as he promised . Now he is trying to steal another radio station. What a winner.
 
If I remember correctly, both 103.3 and 96.3 have been off the air for long periods of time over the last couple of years. Yates has his issues, but at least he can keep a station on the air.
 
Well I told you Mrs. Vance would get "HER" back on the Air before the end of the Year... Congratulation!!! Hooking up with Yates is a Sensible
Smart... Money Saving Move. Put something on KJCS Air Waves.
I hear the Monster all over East Texas... Sounding Good TOOO.
Wonder what Bill is thinking now.... Probably trying to get his ASS out of going to the PEN. What a Liar & a Crook. Like he hasn't Stole from somebody.... Great Job... Mrs. Vance!!!
