What's Going On? Just Heard Marvin Gaye on DAVE-FM!

While scanning the band, I noticed DAVE-FM playing "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. Is it just me or is this song really a good fit on a AAA station? Sounded strange hearing Motown and then another WTF song.

Sounds like a format flip may be coming. Tomorrow is the first of the month, so we will have to see what happens.

If this is the case, they may have the new format in the computer already, and a computer bug caused the song to be played.

I heard them play that song one Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago on their Acoustic Sunrise show.

It certainly got my attention because it did sound out of place. But I'm guessing that maybe a slip up dropped it in the rotation by acident tonight.

With today's technology and these crazy computers we work with anything is possible. Although, the computers have made our jobs much easier too. ;D

The new format could be oldies (like WCBS-FM) or R&B/Urban oldies (already covered by Kiss and 102.5 to some extent). And also, Dave's HD2 station is broadcasting dead air. Something is definitely up.

I would have guessed that Dave would have waited for 99X to flip so that they could pick up some of those listeners.

If you keep up with Triple-A around the country, it's not unusual for many of the more traditional ones to play "What's Going On" (or Al Green, Bill Withers, War, or Stevie Wonder). After all, the progressive rock stations that Triple-A listeners grew up with played most of those artists as currents.

It's a little more unusual on a younger, more-alternative leaning Triple-A like Dave, though.

Yeah, but they do that every now and again. I heard it some months ago late on a Saturday night. So, I don't think it's anything to be alarmed about...........yet.

No. I think it's a classic universal song respected in rock circles.
If they played "Let's Get It On, that would be a different story.

Maybe they did something crazy like play a request? Although I have heard that song acouple times before on Dave.

Ask Neil Milkman, the world's foremost authority on programming.

+1 double-good

I've been lurking around these boards for a while and reading a lot of the talk surrounding Dave FM. I'd never been a listener but a few weeks ago I decided to listen (after 9 - that Holly chic's voice gets on my nerves) and find out what all the fuss was about. I'm not in the radio business with the exception of 4 years of dj'ing in college so these are an unprofessional analysis.

Likes:
1. The music, in general.
2. Metro in the Retro - ripoff of 99Xs House of Retro Pleasure
3. Acustic Sunrise - yet another 99X ripoff
4. DJs - aren't that bad
5. Mara's lunch hour but I could do without the singing.

Dislike - lack of variety in the music - it's like they have one continual loop and the only variety is what R.E.M. or U2 song they will throw in. Those are the only 2 artists that get any variety what-so-ever.

So many questions to answer...

IT - It is not uncommon for AAA stations to play crossovers like Marvin, Stevie and Bob Marley. When I am elected PD of 929 Radio Atlanta, look for more crossovers from R&B, Jazz and Blues.

marsneedsscoop - Your comment rings true but sad. If 20-29 year olds don't recognize great, timeless music, they are beyond help. When I have kids, the first CD I am playing to the young PD to be is "What's Goin' On" by Marvin Gaye.

Johnny Boy - though a newbie, you may be wise. I will keep my eye on you.

Mikey - I was called Milkman when we played 16" softball coz I always delivered! You are obviously extremely erudite in that you recognize that I am indeed "the world's foremost authority on programming."

Langer - The Q100 reference is like the slow clap, you have to know when to do it.

Lovey - Welcome newbie. You like Acoustic Sunrise? Are you Michelle Engle? Don't ever bad mouth Mara, her singing is better than Mariah, Celene and Dolly, just ask Charlie Kane. That said, you are dead on with the musical variety. Margot has her title back and has made changes, subtle though they are. I know that within one month, DAVE will sound different and better.

For the last time, no flip in formats until after January 1.

Neil Millman is goddess!

Every once in a while Dave will play Marvin Gaye. I've even heard Stevie Wonder. They've been playing the two artists ever since they flipped from classic rock to AAA. Not often mind you. But every once in a while.

they might be moving into a jack type of station
Uh oh! As much as I would like the Jack format...didn't they learn something from the mistake that they made with WCBS-FM? It did show some potential in NYC right before it was flipped and it would do well on a weaker frequency like 96.7, 93.3, or even 102.3.

I heard a Led Zep song on Dave not too long ago. Very surprising. At least they weren't playing Lenny Kravitz's Let Love Rule again.
