What's going on @ KOMP?

No mention on the board about this earlier so I figured I'd post it. Between Gooch outing their midday girl a couple of weeks ago and trashing the company and now this, it seems like things aren't going well at KOMP.

(From Norms October 14th column in the RJ) "A radio promotion at the Hard Rock Hotel pool last Friday devolved into a messy scuffle involving a star deejay at KOMP-FM, 92.3, and a former deejay. Craig Williams of KOMP's morning show got into a fight with former KOMP deejay who went by the on-air name Wolf. The Hard Rock confirmed that two men involved in the incident were escorted off the property. Lotus Broadcasting did not return calls on Tuesday."

Actually, things are going great here at KOMP! And the things you heard about Gooch are completely false. And I'll leave it at that.

I know Gooch and that sounds so out of character for him. He's not a spitefull guy, despite what you hear on the radio. ;)
I thought DD left for another gig? why would he be bitter then?

I've been in radio since '89 and before moving to Vegas 5yrs ago, worked at a station that did nothing but voictracks on the wknds. I love working at Komp. we're all live!

I love listening to KOMP (I live in Toronto, Canada) and hear it through my Iphone or online...I would like to see KOMP get the House of Hair radio show..it is hard to pick up in my area or if you can't get the show, play hair music on Fri or Sat nights.

Mel plays "92 minutes of hair" every Sunday morning from 8:30 - 10:00 am, right after the Floyd Fixx. She plays all the tunes you know with some cool deeper hairballs thrown in like Y&T, Helix, Zebra, WASP, and Accept.

I have fond memories of KOMP playing Zebra-Who's Behind The Door as a current in the summer of 83. I loved that song. Another one I remember KOMP playing in that era was Fastway-Say What You Will. I wonder if Mel ever plays that?

That track is definitely in the system. I put it there!! Hahaha!! I love the Fastway tune too.

Jay - I'm playing that Fastway song tomorrow morning round 8:30ish. Think of it as an early Holiday gift! ;D
I post all my playlists on my FB page...Mel Komp. I'm always looking to add to my hair library, so feel free to message me with suggestions. ;)

OK I'll be listening. I haven't heard that song in ages. I had the Fastway album in 1983. I remember it had a checkered flag cover.

There is a thread on the rock board (that's been going on for over three years!) called "songs you never hear on radio anymore" and somebody recently mentioned "Say What You Will" More people remember that song than I thought.

It's far from metal but I was thinking about a song KOMP played a lot in the Spring of 1983 that today would be considered the ultimate soccer mom 80s tune. It's a song you will hear on TV commercials or a Hot ACs retro lunch hour, Many people today would be under the impression it was a huge pop hit in the 80s and all over the radio. Yet I don't believe it made the CHR chart at all. The only LV station that played it as a current was KOMP yet you would never associate it with KOMP today. Anyone want to take a crack at this?

Jay....was KOMP Burkhart/Abrams in 1983?? Over 50 BA stations switched to "Rock of the 80's" in mid 1983; I was doing overnights at WEZX, Rock107 in Scranton when they switched to this....we played Modern English as an "A" (every 4 hours and 20 min.)....I remember playing "Beat It" from Michael Jackson. Only a month earlier our core artists were Zep, Stones, Pink Floyd, and Rush! Got a lot of hate calls and had one of 107's lowest books ever. I heard only a couple Rock of the 80's stations did well (WZZO, in Allentown did great...no CHR in that market). Curious about KOMP...I first heard them in 86 or 87 and they were very heavy even then.

Yes KOMP was a B/A station and they did go rock of the 80s. It was a disaster nationwide but KOMP was one of the exceptions. In fact I believe Spring 83 was their highest rated book they ever had, they were in the 12 share range 12+ (of course this is back when there were a lot fewer signals and less fragmentation). I loved it myself becaue I was a big KROQ fan at the time. Even if they had local success with rock of the 80s, KOMP shifted back to a more traditional rock format when B/A advised their clients to do so.
