What's Going On With WEZZ In Clanton

Reason why I asked, is because I heard the following, this morning:

1. WEZZ is fading into the sunset.
2. The goodtimes are coming, stay tuned.

Is WEZZ fixing to switch over to Oldies? Just curious.

P.S. At this moment, they are still playing Classic Country.

Don't know about oldies, but it looks as though some sort of format change is in the works. I heard something about "trading in their cowboy boots" this afternoon.

I figured WEZZ would have switched formats when the xmtr location/city of license was changed to Jemison, since it would be covering more of the southern Birmingham suburbs. Whatever format they change to, I hope they don't lose the local flavor it currently has and become just another "Birmingham" station.

Didn't WEZZ program oldies, or at least in a partial sense, in the past?

They did cater to Southern Gospel, Monday-Friday mornings and evenings but when the station was sold, the new owner(s) ditched the weekday SG programs and went to all Country.

They have always mixed in the classics with the currents over the many years, I have been able to listen to them.

P.S. With this talk of WEZZ possibly switching their format, I wonder if:

1. WEZZ will change its calls and ditch the Gospel programming completely.
2. WLKF will change its calls and format.

Haven't heard anything on air about WKLF changing, but I don't usually listen to them as much as I do WEZZ. Sounds like the WEZZ calls might go though, if they've been announcing that WEZZ is "fading into the sunset".

Considering that Chilton County and south Shelby County are growing rapidly, wouldn't it seem to reason that the owner of the station might be trying to make it sound a little more "professional"? Whenever I've tuned it to, I've always been struck with just how hokey it sounds. The same goes for 97.7 in Oneonta, another area that's beginning to experience suburban sprawl from Birmingham.

It sounds that way to me. Last time I was visiting that area, I saw many new homes and businesses sprouting up, like wildfire. This also includes the main shopping area of Calera. (Northern side around Wal-Mart)

Whatever ends up happening, with those stations, hope the new format(s) will have success and attract many new listeners and advertisers.

It's Just "Peachy"

This ad was in the monthly "Helena City News":

97.7 FM WHPH The Peach

WEZZ will soon be WHPH the Peach
Serving Shelby and Chilton counties with your favorites of the '60's and '70's

I guess that answers a lot of questions, doesn't it? My only question is, what took them so long? Listeners in their cars in Shelby County can get WZZK, the Bull and New Country 97.3 from Birmingham; 'TXT and 95.3 from Tuscaloosa, WLWI from Montgomery, and Dixie 100 from Selma. Unfortunately, we'll be down to "only" seven country stations.

Thanks for sharing this info.

Since Clanton and Chilton County are known as the Peach Capital of Alabama, the new name and calls will fit in just right.

Hope the new format will work for them.

P.S. I keep hearing that the switch is fixing to occur. Wonder if Monday will be the day. Just curious. Also, did this article say anything about WKLF ditching Southern Gospel, for some other format. Just curious.

Re: It's Just "Peachy"

No article; it was just an ad. But nothing was said about the AM station.
