What's Going On With WYVC In Camden?

I ask this because they've been silent for the past week now.  Did they go broke, are they having some tech issue(s) or did the FCC get them on some violation?

R.D.P. <><

P.S. This station has always been an easy catch for me, here in Selma.  They usually came in with a moderate signal, on most days, in my car and/or truck.

I was hesitant to say anything, but here goes.

If WYVC was an easy catch in Selma it's because they were running way too much power from a different tower site as listed on their FCC application. They're supposed to be running a class A equivalent (6,000 watts from 315 feet HAAT) but my understanding is that they're on a taller tower with a 10 bay antenna, putting out the equivalent of 25,000 watts. Or they were until an equipment failure.

I think WYVC ran off their AM sister station's tower, which fell some time ago. So rather than file an STA or app to move, they just erected a new antenna on a different tower, at a much higher vantage point. The AM, for all I know, may have even run with the tower down until something in the transmitter went kerblooie. The tower isn't totally on the ground, just hung up in the trees at a very precarious angle.

What follows is being relayed from someone else's observations, caveat emptor:

As was told to me, there are no fences around either the AM or FM sites, no door on the transmitter shack (with everything inside rusting away), no EAS equipment and no program lists or public file.

The owner apparently sees nothing wrong with any of this because that's the way they've always run. He is said to have some pretty strange notions about radio, like the fact that WAMI got a CP for 100 kW so he should be able to get 100 kW as well and they could "share the dial" since they're both on 102.3 MHz.

I've also been told that work is being done (or has been done) to get the station back on the air with as close to legal power as possible. Whether that's been done yet or not is unknown. But as they're already violating so many other rules, there's a possibility the owner will just crank the power back up when whoever fixes it leaves.

Selma should be out of the main coverage area of the legal facility, so you might not hear them again except when the wind blows right, unless the old man cranks the power back up.

How did WAMI get 100 KW. Looks like some "overlapping"

Someone didn't renew their license on time a few years back and was technically deleted long enough for WAMI to apply for 100kw. The previously deleted station is back on the air now and would have to change frequencies for WAMI to go 100kw. That's all I remember, someone else will know the rest of the story.

Now for some beefs I have with this station:

1. The main announcer loves to carry on when he's speaking.
2. The sound quality has room for major improvements.
3. Just like WBFZ here in Selma and WVFG in Uniontown, this station hardly ever gives out any weather reports and/or informs the people when severe weather is about the strike their area.

Maybe we could get them a EAS, Mr. Zach and help get it in operation.  However, our good deed wouldn't pan out.  The owner(s) would say thanks for the gift but we have no need for one at this time.

P.S. What's the purpose behind WYVC broadcasting in mono?  Just curious.

They wouldn't take the EAS if it were free, as they don't seem to understand the need for one.

Broadcasting in mono generally improves a station's fringe coverage on receivers that don't automatically blend the stereo when it gets weak. Some car stereos like older Delco units don't blend at all and you'll hear a lot of noise on the fringe with those receivers.

Even at licensed power, the station covers its community well, so they may be mono because the owner just doesn't know any better.

If you're hearing them in Selma again, chances are the old man cranked the power back up and is in violation of FCC rules for the umpteenth time.

Either that or my older Sanyo truck radio has a powerful tuner in it. (One I got back in 1997)

The tape player part no longer works though, since I used it so much.

Anyway, it's good to hear Dr. Neolin Craig and Brother John again.

Love to get a few laughs on, when I need some.

P.S. And yes this station is still being heard in glorious mono.

Today I was a bit peed off at them.

The volume level was way too loud and I couldn't hear the music at all.

Had to adjust some of the buttons on my truck radio, just to make out what was going on.

The people running this station just don't get it.

This station is just wasting space.

After I got some laughs on, I found something else to listen to.  :D  :D  :D

The music may be uplifting but the way they present themselves is very humorous indeed.

Not once, while listening, did I hear a weather report of any kind.

Brother John and Dr. Craig, please stop with this insanity and let me and Mr. Zach take over.

We could give Camden a top notched radio station and make a real go of it.

P.S. Maybe it would've been nice to have seen WAMI in Opp get a power increase after all.  They sound more professional anyway.  When I listen to them online, that's the impression I get.  Kudos to WAMI for doing a great job.  WYVC could learn a thing or two from your wonderful example.

Now for something strange.  WYVC was coming in real good in the town of Autaugaville.  You heard me right.  They were coming in, just like they were a local station from the Montgomery area.

P.S. For those wondering, this was happening earlier today while I was coming back from the city of Prattville.

Sounds like someone has put a few extra sticks of firewood in the heater lol ;) ....

I wouldn't touch that station with a ten foot whatchamajigger.

I would. I can't tell you how many times I've daydreamed of bringing some professionalism to WYVC, a station that has more loyal listeners than it probably deserves. If my Powerball numbers would ever hit, I guarantee you 102.3, WCOX 1450, and WKXK 96.7 would operate differently and sound differently than what folks are used to. Listeners deserve better than what they've usually received out of these three.
