I think 97x sounds better than ever before. I noticed they are, Panama City Rock Station.Have they lost New rock 97x?
They play new rock , and more older rock.
I think they are making for the most part a good move.
The firing of the Yoda guy was a smart move. He was old, and wasn't with the format any longer. He couldn't even complete a thought on the air. He just rambled on and on. I guess it comes with old age.
Stroke has been there few years, and is a decent dj. Not great, but good! The night guy is decent as well. I hear him on in the morning, and at night. What's up with that?
I think 97x will have a future. They have nothing to worry about!
Howie
I was the very first PD and afternoon guy of 97X when it was flipped back on in 1997 under Steve Kingston & Don Caveleri's ownership.
We were a very alternative leaning rock station playing "Smack My Bitch Up", Foo Fighters, Offspring but you'd also hear Sweet Home Alabama. You can get away with a SMALL handful of classics mixed on that station... for god sakes it's Panama City. (You should have seen us try to explain that to Kingston who was PD of K-Rock/New York at the time, lol)
We had the right music plus Stern and listeners came to 97X in droves. Within the first couple of weeks, ROCK 103 got scared and fired their morning show (Bubba & Woody?). And not long after that, ROCK 103 just gave up and was history.
97X can still play that SMALL handful of classics today and even some of those songs from '97 on up to today every now and then. We owned the young males (16-21) then, they are all 25-30 today and I bet loyal fans of the station.
The other unique thing about 97X in 1997 was the jocks. We looked for the oddest people we could find and put em on. No rules.
I'm proud to say the very first jock I put on 97X was Yoda. He wasn't good at first because we couldn't get the top40 DJ sound out of him (he had been on Island part-time as "Marty The One Party"). He knew he wasn't good but wanted to do the rock thing so bad I left him on and he replaced me in afternoons when I left, staying there for 10 years.
And Howie, while I'll agree that maybe he rambled some, it was always still more entertaining than anything happening on The Fox or Arrow. His sounding "old" as you say towards the end on 97X was most likely due to him being bored after ten years.
Anyways, for the record Yoda wasn't fired, he left 97X on his own for a new home:

He's doing TV news directing (?) in Albany too like he did in PC.
