What's happened to 97X?

I thought the name on the marquee said "NEW ROCK"? What is up with all the "older" music being played on 97X? Aren't there two other stations servicing the older rock music in town? I guess it doesn't matter, the station has been going downhill since FREAK left and when YODA departed, that was the final nail so to speak. Those guys were 97X. Guess they will be flipping to something else soon anyway.

I don't know. The station comes here faintly since we have a 97.5 and a 98.1. That station plays nothing but crap. Can you pick up 101.5? They are trying to target the younger tourists who come to PCB, I think.

(Isn't their transmitter in Bonifay?)

I can usally pick up Tk 101 when i'm driving from my home in Mexico Beach to Panama City. Panama city is between two 101.5 and it just depends where your at. I can get either Tk 101 pensacola or X 101.5 Tallahassee on my radio at home. So it just depends on the weather i guess. 98.1 comes in somewhat, but i don't listen to it.

As for 97X, yes there transmitter is in bonifay and i really don't hear that much older type of rock on there. How old does rock have to be before you call it Older stuff?
The reason they prob play nirvana, metallica, STP and so on is that 94.5 plays i think more classic rock than they do new rock. But i'm not that sure

The station is licensed to Bonifay, but they transmit from the same tower as WPAP 92.5 and WFSY 98.5 near Youngstown, FL.

94.5 comes here on a regular basis. Strong signal. Even when there's no skip, I can hear it below the static

-Rob

About the 97x playing old stuff, i work over night and i listen to 97x while i work. This morning (friday) between 1 and 3, i heard them play Living Colour Cult Of Personality and was shocked. Plus, they play alot of Old school metallica and i think i heard some Sabbath too. So i don't know what's going on with the playlist at night, but i kinda like hearing the old School Metallica at night.

Missed it by that () much. It is located on Owenwood Road in Fountain.

Hey HOMEYD....I was going to correct him when he first posted that, but I let it slide....enjoyed the hospitality the other night.

I notice 94.5 The Fox has been playing more classtic rock lately and they have a stornger singal that's goes all the way to Tallahassee. There transmit is in Parker.

The 94.5 transmitter is located on a 1000ft tower 5 miles N of Port St Joe....the city of license is Parker.... for many FM stations, transmitter location and city of license are not the same

They probably won't be X for long.
The only X I know about is 91X San Diego.

(100KW out of Mexico)

-Rob

Don't know

Didn't the X format start in the early 90s with a syndicated network out of Texas? That played alternative music and had a few stations nationwide? One of them was out of Watertown, NY 106.7?

-Rob

X and Z

X is everywhere.. 97X Panama City, X101.5 Tallahassee, 99X Atlanta, etc...

You're thinking of Z-Rock, Circa 1990. They were syndicating heavy metal music with stations nationwide, some were AM. One of their affiliates was 94.5 out of Panama City... here's the kicker, 94.5 was owned by a fundamentalist Christian college back then!

I think 97x sounds better than ever before. I noticed they are, Panama City Rock Station.Have they lost New rock 97x?

They play new rock , and more older rock.

I think they are making for the most part a good move.

The firing of the Yoda guy was a smart move. He was old, and wasn't with the format any longer. He couldn't even complete a thought on the air. He just rambled on and on. I guess it comes with old age.

Stroke has been there few years, and is a decent dj. Not great, but good! The night guy is decent as well. I hear him on in the morning, and at night. What's up with that?

I think 97x will have a future. They have nothing to worry about!

I was the very first PD and afternoon guy of 97X when it was flipped back on in 1997 under Steve Kingston & Don Caveleri's ownership.
We were a very alternative leaning rock station playing "Smack My Bitch Up", Foo Fighters, Offspring but you'd also hear Sweet Home Alabama. You can get away with a SMALL handful of classics mixed on that station... for god sakes it's Panama City. (You should have seen us try to explain that to Kingston who was PD of K-Rock/New York at the time, lol)
We had the right music plus Stern and listeners came to 97X in droves. Within the first couple of weeks, ROCK 103 got scared and fired their morning show (Bubba & Woody?). And not long after that, ROCK 103 just gave up and was history.
97X can still play that SMALL handful of classics today and even some of those songs from '97 on up to today every now and then. We owned the young males (16-21) then, they are all 25-30 today and I bet loyal fans of the station.

The other unique thing about 97X in 1997 was the jocks. We looked for the oddest people we could find and put em on. No rules.
I'm proud to say the very first jock I put on 97X was Yoda. He wasn't good at first because we couldn't get the top40 DJ sound out of him (he had been on Island part-time as "Marty The One Party"). He knew he wasn't good but wanted to do the rock thing so bad I left him on and he replaced me in afternoons when I left, staying there for 10 years.

And Howie, while I'll agree that maybe he rambled some, it was always still more entertaining than anything happening on The Fox or Arrow. His sounding "old" as you say towards the end on 97X was most likely due to him being bored after ten years.
Anyways, for the record Yoda wasn't fired, he left 97X on his own for a new home: http://www.rock103albany.com/dj_04.shtml
He's doing TV news directing (?) in Albany too like he did in PC.

Yoda is a great jock who was well beloved in the market and his ratings showed that. Sad to see people like to "spin" it as if he was let go - when in reality he just decided to leave on his own.

He also was on their station WVVE too - which really showed his diversity and ability to do other things.

You shouldn't judge a person by their age - as to whether they belong on the air. It should be all about how they sound.

I've heard 25 year old jocks who sound 50 and vice versa.

Best of luck to him in his new endeavors.

Either way I hope the very best for the Yoda guy. I just think he was burned out or something. It happens in every business. I have been there before!

I just recently moved back to the area, and think 97x is a great sounding station.

I am thankful for all the P.D.'s and DJ's over the years that have made it a well established station. Including the Yoda guy.

Glad to hear Yoda wasn't fired, he left. I assumed he was fired. I shouldn't judge anything. Sorry!
