What's happening at KTWV "The Wave"?

-- funny, I could have sworn Fresno was larger ...

KMR: Sacramento is actually California's 3rd largest TV market (L.A. #2, San Francisco #6, Sacramento #20, San Diego #28 in the national rankings).

In radio, we're 5th largest in the state (L.A. #2, San Francisco #4, San Diego #17, Riverside-San Bernardino #26 and Sacramento #27 in the national rankings).

The difference? The Sacramento TV market includes Stockton and Modesto. In radio, they are separate markets (#86 and #118 nationally respectively).

I haven't listened to KTWV for a long time. Today I don't notice much change from a year ago. They've played Anytime, Do It Again, That Lady, Fields Of Gold, What's Goin' On, What's Love Got To Do With It, For Once In My Life, Just The Two Of Us, Waterfalls, You Are, Mirrors by Justin Timberlake(!), Give Me The Night, You Give Good Love, Kiss From A Rose, September, Human Nature, Minute By Minute---the same ol' songs I was hearing last year. Gato Barbieri's version of Carlos Santana's Europa was the only pleasant surprise.

The Wave's music doesn't change. They realized that they were driving away longtime listeners with Urban AC which didn't surprise me one bit. By default KJLH is the only station that has a legitimate claim to current R&B. There are a lot of songs KTWV aren't playing, sure they're playing Marsha Ambroius "Run", Ledisi "I Blame You" and Mali Music's "Beautiful". They really play the hell outta John Legend but they've been playing John Legend they're Smooth Jazz days. They're missing out on Kem "Nobody", Avery Sunshine "Call My Name" and Goaple "Hey Boy" but then again KJLH is focusing on them but they're signal doesn't go pass The Valley or the OC. Look at what I've manage to dig up? Compare the difference y'all.

Time for the Wave to do a hot ac format that is slightly more gold based and a bit softer than KBIG(my-fm). Fit it right between kost and my. Gee I wonder what they could call it, maybe I'm being crazy here but I dunno maybe Fresh 947?

Even wit no numbers you make money as the female 40yo add buyers many times say oh I like this music so I'm buying, hey not all but many do.

Ad buyers at agencies are, for the most part, not even in the market that they are buying.

Besides that, they have to buy based on cost per point delivery, starting with the highest ranked stations in the target demo. Many agency clients audit buys to make sure every one met the CPP goals.

They could do a Soft AC approach ala KOST.

I've been saying they should go Hot AC for awhile now. Since Amp is heavily rhythmic, or at least it was the last time I checked, CBS could run it like an Adult CHR (see Mix in Baltimore or Q104 Cleveland) or they could run it more like Fresh in NY or DC. It would not only give "My" some competition, but it would pair well with Amp and KROQ.
And I agree, Fresh 94.7 would be the obvious choice.

KTWV did quite well w/ Jhani Kaye

They tried that already, when Jhani Kaye was PD.

Correct, and IIRC, KTWV was trending quite well during the time Jhani Kaye was there. I think that 94.7 would do quite well emulating what Easy 98.1 has done in San Diego, where it moved from NAC Jazz over to soft AC, and KIFM has quickly seen its fortunes rise to where it now typically places in the top 3 in that market.

Not really. It was trending downwards in 25-54.

Keep in mind that not only is Los Angeles over 50% Hispanic in 18-34 but the Hispanic influence in the market has influence music since before Richie Valens laid down his version of "La Bamba". Further, the 18-34 market is 10% African American and about 12% Asian, meaning that non-Hispanic whites are less than 30% of the market.

This means that a "white" Adult CHR has very little potential audience in the LA market as much of the non-Hispanic white audience has grown up with rhythmic leaning music on KIIS (and more recently, Amp) or with the Churban music of Power 106.

I see three possible logic flaws. Either (1) "trending quite well" means going down in the sales demo; (2) the OP was trying to use the trends for the meaningless 6+ numbers; or (3) YDRC*.

If Jhani Kaye couldn't make the Wave into the second coming of KOST, no one can, clever brand name or not.

I have all of the KTWV newsletters and Air Waves magazines that were issued from 1987 to 2001. In 1987, KTWV played George Benson, Eric Tingstad, Patrick O'Hearn, Kenny G, Fattburger, Hiroshima and Acoustic Alchemy. A decade later, KTWV was playing Natalie Cole, Babyface, Luther Vandross, Toni Braxton and Tina Turner. In the 2000s, KTWV was playing Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Seal, Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, the Doobie Brothers and Gladys Knight & the Pips. For a few years, KTWV was every bit as repetitious as KRTH. Did we really need to hear Take Five and Midnight Train To Georgia three times every day? Today KTWV has played For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder, Sail On by the Commodores, Can't Help Falling In Love by UB40, U Got It Bad by Usher, Never Never Gonna Give You Up by Barry White, So Sick by Ne-Yo, Someone Like You by Adele, and That Lady by the Isley Brothers.

What exactly is KTWV's current format? Does Nielsen Audio have a category called "Hodgepodge"?

That's what an evolving playlist looks like. It changes and adapts to the marketplace, the musical trends, and the demographics. This current incarnation makes complete sense to me, although I'd prefer it to be a tad younger. Compare your playlists to a typical classic rock station like KLOS. They're playing basically the same music now that they played 20 years ago. Is that what you prefer?

David, there is a 100% chance. I just e-mailed David Gleason to ask how I can get those newsletters and magazines to him. I may just let him keep them all. I'm running out of room to store all my radio memorabilia and comics and books and magazines and Disneyana and postcards and baseball cards and business cards and Coca-Cola items. I should be featured on an episode of Hoarders. :)

LARadioRewind, I would like to see the early Wave Musicletters you have. Thanks to Louise Barron, who worked as I think an office manger at KTWV and KMET, I was on the mailing list for those newsletters from 1990-97. Living in St. Louis, that was a treat. While I have some from 1989, I'd like to see others. I have digitized some of mine and posted them as .pdf files. Here is a link to what I have so far:
