What's happening at WHBQ FM?

I recently read that a morning show member, afternoon jock and night jock are all leaving Q107.5. Is this happening at the same time for a reason, say a possible format flip, or just coincidentally?
 
Karson maybe you can answer this. Are Q jocks always looking to get out of Memphis or is it that other stations look at the Q as a great training place/ launch pad.

It seems lots of jocks fine tune their skills here and jettison away.

56 WHBQ was a RKO training ground also back in the day.
 
A Class A with its tower on one side of the metro will be a dead bug on Kix's windshield. Get a 70dBu over all of Shelby County and we can talk...

107.5 has done reasonably well because their signal is not much worse than 101.9's and they do an adequate job with the format. Kix has heritage to burn and a signal strong enough to cause genetic mutations in much of the metro.

107.5 does have that relayer on 96.1 in Tunica which can be heard south of Helena (AR). I heard them briefly bandscanning on a road trip last October between Helena and Elaine AR. But its still nothing like a true big signal FM which "Kix 106" has (BTW, Kix is one of the two big signal Memphis stations I don't hear via tropo in Southeast AR because of KLAZ 105.9 Hot Springs AR--which is a blowtorch itself).
 
I have had two different career paths in my life. And, I have learned one important lesson from each.

As a lawyer, I have learned that most people are stupid. And it ain't fixable.

As a broadcaster, I have learned that a bad signal will kill you. And all the great programming in the world won't fix it.

107.5's signal is fatal in a direct attack. And like stupidity, it can't be fixed.

Yes but it does cover the the soccer mom neighborhoods well. That why the format has done as well as it has.

101.9 doesn't have building penetration on the eastern side of the market where it's needed most.

107.5 doesn't have good coverage in Tipton or Crittenden County where you can hear Kix on the worst of radios most anywhere in any direction. Kix has the heritage status on lock at this point.

Froggy 94 hardly phased Kix as a class B 50kw with good coverage of the market. Flinn tried country on 96.1 as a rimshot from the south and no one really even noticed it. You would think they would take that into consideration.

I still wonder if the exits at Q are not related and maybe there will be a change to 97.7/1430 or 87.7/560. Hopefully Q will be around so we wont have to listen to Seacrest and other piped shows on the other station.
 
Why would Flinn go country with the Rebel already in the format and their Memphis translator up and running? Neither company really has a station the power to compete with KIX. Flinn is beating Radio Not Now why would he flip that signal?

97.7 and 1430 aren't making a dent and Flinn got whooped in the election, meaning that the conservative news/talk is still owned by AM600. I am betting that either Disney Radio or Music of Your Grandparents' Lives makes a stunning return to 97.7 and 1430.
 
Geese, I think it is funny how some people really have no clue what is going on but try to act like it. Disney was paying flinn. They stopped, so Disney went away. and is not coming back. I think most of the time he doesn't care what is on some of the sticks for the most part. It is easier to LMA out a station when it has something on it.
 
The new country station will be on their black gospel 1430/97.7 translator that is 250 watts from a tower at stage rd and brother blvd in Bartlett. It should have decent coverage over Bartlett, Cordova, Lakeland and a few other eastern neighborhoods.
 
It will be interesting who they put on the air. A few Q employees were fired to possibly make room for new hires.
 
I hope an update to the audio is made. The gospel format on 97.7 sounded terrible. The translator seems to have really good coverage to the south. My seek has stopped on it a few times as far away as the north side of Olive Branch.

The thing about the Rebel's translator W288BJ is that by putting it on the WLOK tower it's demo in Memphis will never hear it. It will be nothing but a bullet point on paper used to make sales.

I keep thinking someone will ring up Tim Martz and buy the 103.1 translator.

I look at The Q as a good AAA baseball team. Thankfully, Flinn is committed to live and local so small market jocks can move up and continue to grow on the air at a station like 107.5. I think some may be looking but I also know that some of the major market stations are always watching stations like The Q for their next star. Former staff from the station are (or have worked recently) in NYC, Charlotte, Tampa, San Diego, Nashville and (ahem) Boston. So, it seems to work for everyone. I know I'm grateful for my time at HBQ FM.
 
Well, I for one cannot wait until old George brings back some great Country music the way it should be played. That KIX 106 station has always thought they were the shizzle dizzle but Flinn Broadcasting can bring them down buddy..especially with ME at the helm..hehe. I can't wait til old George calls me. I am gonna try to be half-sober when he does. I'm gonna bring back the good old cart machines for music and commercials too. They sounded so much better well, long as they didn't jam up. Yep, COUNTRY-Q...sounds kinda like Bar-B-Q. Great parallel and both yummy too.

Memphis is a small market compared to those other places. Isn't it something that Memphis is considered somewhat of a starter market these days? You used to think of places like Jackson, TN, Jonesboro, and Tupelo, as starter markets. I'm also glad that Flinn uses as many live, local jocks as he does with his radio entities.
