What's left to program

With the recent layoffs at most of the major owners in this business, it begs the question.....when will the jobs that local program directors have, be eliminated. Why would a company, like iHeart even need a local PD. What do they even do at this point?

Already happening. If you look at the list of those affected, a lot are single-station PDs:

The issue moving forward is to figure out the basis for music charts such as Mediabase or the Billboard Airplay chart. Up to now, the requirement was for a station to have a local PD to take calls from record labels, thus qualifying as a chart reporting station. It's possible for them to make unique local playlists from regional programmers. We'll see if that's how they go. The fact is even airplay charts in general are becoming less important as most music consumption is through streaming. Billboard stopped using its own BDS system a few years ago and has been basing their airplay chart on Mediabase reporters.

This is also why most companies have changed the title from PD to Brand Manager. Or from DJ Disc Jockey to air personality. No discs to jockey.
