What's New

My DVR is set up to only record 'new' episodes of my favorite cable channels programs. I have noticed a disturbing trend. Cable networks are producing 'new' programs from existing programs by: splicing two one hour episodes together to make one two hour 'new' episode, re-arrange material from existing episodes to make a 'new episodes'; adding a couple of minutes of 'bonus' material to an existing episode; adding 'features' like pop-ups to an episode. I guess they figure that viewers on a DVR won't notice that it is really a repeat or that non-DVR viewers will watch since it is 'new'.

They call that 'enhanced episodes,' and I really hate the trend. It's just reruns with a bunch of popups on the screen. ABC started pulling that crap years ago on Lost and a few other shows, where information or facts would pop up at the bottom of the screen for 10-15 seconds at a time. History Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, etc. are now doing this 'enhanced' crap. Tell it like it is, IT AIN'T NEW!!

i hate that concept too in reality TV, never mind the fact i avoid Reality TV except Total Divas/Total Bellas (or any WWE based Reality based shows). only the A&E owned networks and Discovery owned networks do that. and in fact, Discover made the then TNA Wrestling (now Impact Wrestling) do a version of their flagship show "Impact Wrestling" with the "Enhanced" extra crap during their one year run on Destination America, which it didn't work at all and was canceled a short time later as they realized it tried to eat in on the ratings for the original version of Impact Wrestling without the extra crap. still didn't help TNA, as they would end up canceled from that network before the year was over (part of the reason of cancellation was ratings and other parts were Then TNA president Dixie Carter (not the Designing Women actress of the same name) accidentally sent a e-mail meant for other people involved with TNA Impact Wrestling to some of the network executives at Destination America/Discovery)

the extra bonus content versions of reality TV shows is just a way to get new ratings for reruns, and people may catch on easy on that too.

This past season of Cake Boss on TLC (owned by Discovery Networks) the way the promos were they made it seem like the entire two hour Season Premiere was going to be a salute to Buddy's Mom who passed away in June 2017. It wasn't. It was 4 separate unrelated 30 minute (or so) episodes. The remaining episodes of the season were all listed as hour long episodes were actually just 2 30 minute episodes.
