What's Next For The Poor Radio Reps?

When was the last time you booked airline tickets through an agent?
My guess is the next cost cutting move will be to eliminate commissions paid to reps by making agencies book their time on the web. Just like the airlines!

Rates will be published and will rise or fall based on supply and demand and time of year. If you’re station is #17 don’t worry. But if you’re selling for a station that’s in the top 10 and your client list is mostly agency driven, look out you could be out of business.

Some agencies might complain. But I think most will like the control especially if they can negotiate better deals and see your unsold inventory. If they complain they’ll get a rep and pay more!

I’m positive ownership and your flunkee managers are already thinking like this. If nothing else they’ll just keep cutting agency commissions or turn it over to a minimum wage clerk or agency rep. From the mouths of babes, ownership believes you’re nothing but an order taker.
I think they’re all out of touch.

Thanks to Clear Channel, Cox, Saga and the rest of the greed mongering radio-clones you’re selling commodities.

Commodities are products with similar features like coffee or beans. And the only thing that separates them is price.

Google can log on to your corporate server and buy all unsold inventory with the ease of a mouse click. And they buy the inventory without your help at cheap discounted rates.

Believe it its true.

The internets have changed everything.
