What's Next For WLS-FM?

I thought WLS-FM's Jeff Fowler ( Operations manager ) was going to have
some suprises for us regarding the air staff. I guess that was a lie, just like
he said WLS-FM would sound like the BIG 89 WLS used to. As you can
see I'm disappointed as a radio geek.

I'm disappointed, too. I can make my part 15 AM sound like WLS on the studio monitors , and they can't?
(I heard 'em, back in the MusicRadio days, watching through the window, and inside)
Add the long hammond reverb on the side, roll off some of the glaring brilliance, and give us 3 db more in the 300hz - 1500 hz
range, puh-leeze.

I will offer "golden ears" audio consulting at insanely competetive rates to WLS.
It's a quick ride on the el for me. I'll find time if they want help.

The sweet audio of WLS would literally suck you in as you tuned past.
It's not the same thing as "loud" on the FM. Someone there must understand.
How can I HELP?

Why don't you guys write in or email WLS FM and tell them that you all want to hear
that old WLS reverb sound, jusk like they did back in the early days of long time ago.

Just remember, It take more than one person to call in for a song request, and it take even more
to get back that old WLS reverb sound....

You guys bring up a good point about reverb. I think the only station
in Chicago using it right now is WPNT 100.3 (LOVE-FM). Back in the eighties
we had several stations using it like WBBM-FM,WLS-AM and WIND.

I think reverb done right, can add a nice element to a radiostation. Even
WLS talkradio would sound different from WGN if they added reverb.
Again the wimps a WLS-FM believe in that cookie cutter one size fits all
format.

Once again WLS-FM programming needs to wake up!!

The audio chain sounds thin and weak, not big and bold.

Hey Tom – ‘ya know I’m a fan of your philosophy, and I’ll confess to be a "hopeless romantic" myself when it comes to delicious AM audio [I can dial-it to sheer nirvana in my sleep], BUT – these mammals don’t predictably-procreate when in bed on the FM side! What is “fat” on AM is often fatiguing when frequency modulation is involved.

"BIG 'n BOLD" IS GOOD :) I have a bit of personal experience in this... I actually had to call-in an iPod-toting Gen-Xer to tame my Omnia at 70s/80s Josh-FM. The audio [after my repeated failure] ended-up DELIGHTFUL – and I can take NO credit for it... DARN ::) I know only ONE "fifty-something AM aficionado" that can master a gender-change to the FM rig – Bob Hawkins [aka "Bob On The Job" on the Indiana board].

I was in Chi last weekend, and yes—WLS-FM needs audio relief!

Labor Day brings changes.
Do you think something will happen over the weekend? Maybe Lujak/Edwards will be the new morning guy, Fred 9-noon, Greg noon to 3, Brant 3-6, JRL 6-9 and Dick Biondi 9-midnight. Maybe reverb will be added, True Oldies will be dropped in favor of Musicradio, more 70's and 80's and much less 60's, news in the aftenoon drive, live weekends and touchtones for great contests!

you never know....

or will it be the same lame 94.7 WLS-FM -Chicago's True Oldies Channel???

Where did you got this information from I wonder???...

I really don't think Brant Miller will do afternoon drive. He has his TV duties during the afternoon/evenings. Besides, JRL would better fit that time slot.

Have Bob Dearborn 6 to 9 nights? Maybe Scott Miller could voice track overnights. Your other suggestions are fine. There, the problem is solved. Easy.

Labor Day brings changes???
How did you find all this out, and what's going on???? What kind of changes???

I don't think he is stating these "changes" as fact. Sounds as if he is asking if they "might" change and then gives thoughts about who he would want as air personalities (whoops, disc jockeys).

Of course, he can answer this himself.

These additions are wonderful for speculation purposes and I for one would love to hear Lujack & Edwards in the morning along with Fred Winston sometime during the day, but let's get real. There is no way citadel is going to shell out the $ to bring in these people.
Having said that, I hope that I'm proven wrong, but I doubt it.

I agree with VFOREST76 on his hope that Labor Day brings a change to
the lame sounding True Oldies Channel WLS-FM. As I stated before,
I think Jeff Fowler ( Operations Manager ), is afraid to upset his
boss Scott Shannon in New York. WLS-FM has its hands tied as far as
any format control they may have. I still think there missing a major
opportunity for ratings by stucking with its current sound.

We will have to see if Labor Day holds any hope for us die-hard WLS
fans.

What they need to do is apply classic WLS energy and momentum, but find jocks that were inspired by WLS to do the format and be live at least 6a - 12m. Not the original guys, but the next generation that idolized them. Not a re-creation, but a replication - it might just be possible.

But staffing it properly might be hard to justify that on .96 a share for CDL stock, though. But then so is the $11 million payday for the CEO.

Why not bring in Larry Lujack part time at least?

Because Larry's act was fried about 20 years ago.

Wow. You really don't get it, do you. It's not an act. It's reality. It may be too much for today.

Uncle Lar is the Wolfman Jack of my life.

I'd go on, but shucks, Lar'd enjoy it too much if read anything too glowing.

I do hope someone would cough enough $$ up to bring Larry in.

Boss Radio is nowhere near the Left Coast. It's just a screen name.

Lujack became his character (grumpy old man who wanted to be in the forest ranger station) in the '80s, and ceased to be entertaining.

Your old Uncle Lar could pretty much cause any party to fizzle.

Labor Day's come and gone, still no reverb, and 94.7 sounds nothing like WLS. I don't know what to call it, it's the audio equivalent
of a bad-inkjet printer photograph.
