What's Next for WNEW?

They're talking about FRESH 102.7....an AC format.
I like it. Might knock LTW out of the lead.

Country...I doubt it.

Active or Alternative would work just fine. It's time for CBS/Infinity to stop using their cookie-cutter template for this format and to actually do some market research before they decide what direction to take. K-Rock was all over the place, playing some old classic rock staple and following it up with Limp Bizkit. This format can work if it has a wider playlist and a more focused selection of music combined with a solid morning show that fits the demo. Mix 102.7 is struggling because too many companies are going after the same audience, and it's inevitable that some are going to lose out. Whatever they decide to do, CBS/Infinity would be wise to target Men under 50 with an Active or Alternative Rocker - I don't care if Free, Mix or Jack goes, because I don't listen to any of them and the same applies to the majority of listeners in their area of reception.

But if Mix 102.7 will change Country 102.7 then it will play all country music from classic to current and I will join the music fun with COUNTRY 102.7. ;D

SoulCrusher:

As far as Active Rock is concerned, that was a format that failed with the original WAXQ. And that was why they switched to Classic Rock in the summer of 1996.

I've posted this since the beginning of time (just a form of expression) on the NYRMB for those who don't read it that the old WNEW-AM should be resurrected on 102.7 FM, which at one time simulcasted with its old AM sister.

But in the year 2006/2007 it would have to be more of an AC/Standards (85/15) mix because most of WNEW-AM's first generation listeners are dying off.But there are some upper age baby boomer that may enjoy hearing some Sinatra and Ella mixed in with Manilow, Neil Diamond and their like.

Some of today's pop artists like Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Smokey Robinson have recorded CD's dedicated to the golden era of Pop Standards. Tony Bennett's latest CD of duets featrures some of today's artists.

Would WNEW achieve top ratings with a Liter than Lite format? Maybe not, but this is a format that has the potential of reaching into the top 15 or a mid 2 share.

The real story on Active Rock

That is not really accurate Kevin. WAXQ was not a true (or at least a well executed) Active Rocker, Ill never be able to forget their positioner "we never talk over the music" that is as poor as it gets. Here they were trying to attract a rock audience using AAA mechanics, it was the most dull, lifeless station I have ever hheard, second only to WNEW in it's "rock" incarnation. I know that to some people WNEW is a sacred cow but as a rock station it was alwayys a total bore to me at least. They always leaned classic even when they were supposed to be a current based station. Q104 was just so poorly executed that the truth is that we do not really know how a true, well done, active rock would be recieved. Dont use Q104 as the measuring stick it was just not done well. Also they flipped classic because of the typical corproate thinking that men between the ages of 25-54 would have more money in their pockets than men 18-34, this was before the dot com revolution where in the mid 90's you had 24 and 25 year old kids buying multi million dollar condos in the city. So yes the companies have their drfault settings and they snap back to the old traditional thinking that they're comfortable with "classic rock will attract affluent 40 year old white suburban males" so that will be an easier sell. They have missed the boat in that there is (in the NYC market in particular) a lot of cash sloshing around in the pockets of the men 18-34, they're not all slackers!. Either way WNEW will not go active rock, tehy will not go country if they have any sense.

Other things need to be taken into account with regards to Active Rock. There was a lot more in the way of crossover back in 1996, but now there are a ton of acts that are Active Rock mainstays: Disturbed, Godsmack, System Of A Down, Korn, Mudvayne and Slipknot to name a few. We also can't forget that at the time WAXQ was up against two other rock stations in WXRK and WNEW (mostly Classic, true, but they played more new rock than Classic Rock Q 104 does).

NYC has never had a genuine Active Rocker executed the right way, and they only had a decent Alternative for a couple of years before CBS/Infinity tried to fix what wasn't broken and ended up destroying it.

Whatever format they decide to go with, CBS would be smart to flip WNEW. Mix and KTU are almost identical, and the former is always the loser in the ratings. Adult Standards, Country, or Active/Alternative would all perform better than the current format - the same holds true for Free and Jack.

I hope WNEW flips for one main reason: maybe KTU can ACTUALLY become a dance station again.

I cant see it going country... probably either Standards or Rock.

It would have a better chance of going country than going standards....that is, close to zero instead of zero. If CBS ditched oldies due to the demos issue, why would they bring back an even *older* format? Nothing against the format, but that's the reality of how radio works. They might as well stick with Mix if they're going to do that.

Exactly right Neo. The country drum has been beaten to death and it just aint going to happen. Anyone of you guys who keeps trying to sell country as a viable format for NYC is just talking through the filter of your own taste. NY aint a country town pardner, deal with it and ride off into the sunset.

Sorry it it just that simple.

[/quote] you want standards go to stardust on sirius or xm 73 franksplace

Good News for WNEW

According to Allan Sniffen on the NYRMB, WNEW's weekday airstaff has been let go this week. Paco Lopez, Efren Sifuentes, Carol Ford, and Yvonne Velasquez are all being let go. What about Rick Martini? Is he the last one on board to be let go?

The disk jockeys are still on the WNEW-FM web site. Obviously one hand doesn't know what the other is doing over there. Likely, an outside firm which runs the web site was not informed of the terminations of the personalities. It is pretty low of the CBS radio management to terminate people a few days before Christmas

A bogus website, probably. (was Re: What's Next for WNEW?)

This is NOT the first time somebody created a bogus website just for the sake of having fun. If you recall, somebody grabbed the "newcountry1027.com" domain and actually put a website on-line a few years ago, when WNEW-FM was going through one of its' MANY formattic phases. It was pretty convincing too, considering it had links to New York weather, a news ticker and some very professional features with lots of photos of "New Country" stars.

I wouldn't hold stock in this "Fresh Country" stuff.

As for CBS giving "pink slips" to many WNEW on-air staffers, it seems that the Grinch is in full force this week. Read the New England TV Board and see what happens to 150 staffers at WLVI-TV (Channel 56). Not a pretty sight. "You're a MEAN one, Mr. Grinch........". It sure takes the fun out of broadcasting, doesn't it?

Fresh huh? Everything is recycled. When programming in the 80's i was using FRESH in my imaging and Moniker. Many station were especially Churban/Dance formats.

I'm sure some overrated CONsultant will claim it's a first. :D

CBS is no longer innovators just followers. They decided to follow the business model of Crap Channel and CUMELESS.

Martini is a nice guy but i don't think he was ever qualified to be PD in NYC. But then again it's CBS.
