What's Next For WYUU?

Okay, so Tropical ain't working. Getting a low 2 share in a market with 12 percent Hispanics, and being the only Spanish FM on the dial means something isn't working very well.
Since 12 percent is a highg enough percentage, and since the Hispanic population of the Bay area is growing, there is definitely a hole for a Spanish FM (or two). The question is for what: Spanish Contemporary? Spanish A/C? Regional Mexican? Spanish Oldies?

While there is a significant Mexican population in Tampa, like Florida's other major metropolitan areas the Latino population is very diverse. There is a large Cuban and Puerto Rican community, as well as a growing number of people from places like Colombia and central America. This is due to both migration from abroad, and due to the migration of Hispanics from South FL and the Northeast.

Gee, it could be the all Schnitt all the time station, or better yet...Sell it back to Dan Johnson and let him play classical all day.

Say what you will about MJ, but he is the most successful talent in Tampa at the moment, has been for years. How many other jocks can pull off doing mornings at CHR and afternoons at N/T? How many of them can obtain such high ratings in their dayparts? How many of them are syndicated to other big markets like MJ?
Let's face it - he might have a bit of an ego, but he's one of the biggest talents in the country, and of the alltime most successful jocks in Florida.

Re: What's Next For WYUU or WMTX

I doubt 92.5 will be going back to English programming anytime soon and I don't think that's what you're suggesting. I think that since they're only a little over a year old they're still experiencing some growing pains. Maybe CBS thought more of the AMs would have gone away by now but Mega has re-positioned their properties well and seem to be holding their own. My guess is if you look at the break downs in the ratings book La Nueva 92.5 is probably not doing as bad as it looks. Rememeber, if stations like 102.5 can stumble along for years in the 2's and still make sales, so can the only FM Spanish signal that's barely a year old.

Side note.... when the hell is CC gonna sh*tcan 100.7? I say flip it to Christmas programming before Magic does Friday and re-launch after the holidays as Rumba or as as a "party" AC with Whoopie in the morning. If Clear Channel wants to cut costs and fire people, the one they seemed to missed was Nancy Alexander. She should have been gone WAY before Olivia Fox.

Ugggh. Scnitt is a great talent. Excuse me while I swallow poison.
He is like another old Tampa favorite... Cleveland Wheeler. Great Whoop.

Numbers don't really mean too much when you are selling an "exclusive" format that has a niche. The only FM Spanish in Tampa is really all they need to sell.

Hate to tell you this Bill, but...

I hear that Mix is doing the online Christmas music thing already (and it's not even Thanksgiving yet!), so I don't think that Mix is going to be all-Christmas-all-the-time. Speaking of Magic, I wonder when they'll be "all-Delilah-all-the-freaking-time" since they almost already are...

If WYUU-FM change back to engish then all the good spanish music that used to be on AM dail goes back to AM?? WMGG-AM is the only station to have the good spanish music back beside classtic mega. AM 680 RUMBA change to Genies a few weeks ago.

CHRles has hit it right..Going "Spanish" is just nuts..It would be like a station in Germany going "English" and playing nothting but Cowboy songs from the movies..because "all English speaking people like cowboy songs" Some English language listners are from England, or Canada, or Australia (Hi david) or lots of places..that doesn't translate to what all people who speak a certain language like..Certainly Puerto Rican spanish listeners might not take to Mexican, and Cuban spanish listeners are much more conservative and selective. It's not an easy proposition to just "go Spanish" That would be like "going Asian" whew..THAT would be a rough one.

Say..just play Vic Damone, and Sammy Davis Jr. and everyone will be happy..right Frank?

Jeff....a well done "adult standards" format that is smooth and hip will work. Stay away from Roger Miller to Glenn Miller train wrecks!

If the numbers don't improve I would predict a movin format on its way to tampa on WYUU, the movin format is for the birds but it is the blue light format special of the week right now hitting more and more markets.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that it's not only the numbers, it's the sort of numbers WYUU gets. In other words, if the 2+ share consists of "upscale affluent Hispanics" then it may still be an easy sell. WYUU also has reasonable numbers in Sarasota (#11 2.6). One other thing in WYUU's favor: they probably have better daytime metro coverage than any Spanish AM and certainly cover the market at night better than the AM Spanish competition. If I wanted to reach Tampa's Hispanic radio listeners, I would still include WYUU in the campaign.

Since (unfortunately) I can't be there to listen, maybe WYUU just needs to refine it's Spanish format/presentation?

Now, 101.5 is another story.

Really?? You mean it took nearly seven years for Cox to finally realize that "the Point" format wasn't going to work? Especially the way they were running the station (only two Dj's and a computer for the rest--not to mention half the time the audio quality sounded like they were in a tunnel, and a very limited playlist).

Now that you've mentioned 101.5, could 100.7 be far behind as well?

Gracias, Rob
