What's RIGHT with L.A. Radio???

As entertaining as it has been listening to all the negativity that has floated around the board for the past few months, it would be interesting to see if any of the posters can find anything postive about what's going on.

So i put it to you (and I pray we stay on topic)...right now, is there anything or anyone doing something RIGHT in L.A. radio? What programmers are puttingout good stuff? What personalities make you want to tune in everyday...or at least would like have work at your station (real or fantasy). What is clicking on all cylinders....any why.

And to narrow it down, I'd like to keep the discussion to who and what is on LA Radio right now....now who you'd like to see back on.

You have the floor...I'll just sit and listen

Okay, I'll bite, especially since I too am tired of all the negativity.
CC has some stations that seem to be together. The KFI morning show continues to entertain and inform. Handel isn't the smoothest. Doesn't have the best voice either, but he knows how to move the show along and how to tell a story.
KOST still sounds great as soft AC's go. They have a veteran staff that knows how to do the format. Mark & Kim are solid. It's not a super funny or innovative show, but they make it work for those who have kids in the car.
Say what you want about KRTH, but Shotgun Tom still cooks. I'm not too crazy about the very formatted call-ins, but the guy still sounds great. Energetic and happy. The WAVE is consistent. Like KOST their talent are vets. They all seem to know what to do and how to do it. Hard to single any one jock out there. They're just a smooth bunch. Especially the midday and afternoon shows.
I could continue, but maybe someone else can be complimentary about others in the market.

I agree...CC does have some good stations in LA.

(1) The playlist tweaking over the past year at KIIS has been great. They sound perfect for a CHR in LA. Putting Suzy Tavares on middays was a good move too. The tweaking in the imaging and the new jingles are great too.

(2) KBIG can be kind of cheesy but it really is a fun station to listen to. Charlie Tuna and Gary Spears are excellent, top-notch jocks. Archer is good too in the mid-day. Boogie Nights is fun too. Kind of has the feel of an 80's pop station to me.

(3) KOST is very solid and very dependable. The music is still a bit softer than a lot of ACs around the country that no longer really sound like AC to me anymore. It's nice to still hear some Kenny Rogers, Carpenters, Air Supply, Barry Manilow, etc. on an AC station instead of Hoobstank and Maroon5 all day. Excellent jocks and imaging.

(4) Hot 92 Jamz tweaked its playlist a bit in late 2003/early 2004 and it's still sounding really good. Just unfortunate that Michelle Visage and Mario Lopez left the Morning Jamz Session...I thought together with Diana, they held it down.

Here is an unsung hero: Howard Hoffman of KABC. He's thier ProdD, and has had a hand at some of the more fun-to-listen to promos on 'ABC and 'SPN.

Especially with KSPN, he really cuts loose. His digs at the competition are sweet in my opinion. ALways great to hear someone who LOVES his job.

A great idea! I was thinking earlier of posting a contra thread to my last post about "famuous decisions". It seems it's been awhile since there have been stunning format debuts. JACK? In 1981 KIIS-FM re-tooled and brought Rick Dees in. The Wave 94.7. R.W.M. to KRTH in 1992. Several Spanish language stations came into their own. Of course the great May 1965 intro of everybody knows what! More? The emphasis lately seems to be on tightly focused presentation/imaging and selling but not total new format concept.

Ditto on Howard H.... even heard his voice on Radio Disney. Love his spots for divorced dads... The District Attorney at your doorstep?? What a lark..
He did some spots for me on KABC a few years ago.
I remember him back on WPIX in NYC when I lived in Jersey

ever check out Howard's website?

* KROQ is solid through and through. Especially production wise, ever since their John Frost days.
* KFI as a whole, not just Bill Handel (mentioned previously in this thread) is much packaged like a good Top 40 station, simply substitute talk for pop.
* KFWB has a well-harvested overall sound, feel, and rhythm.
* KCRW is widely regarded as a top notch public radio station in both public affairs programming and innovative music.

Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)</P>

> The Wave 94.7.

Well, with a qualifier. When it first debuted, it was pretty poor in execution (remember "no DJs" and the "lifestyle" vignettes?).

Once they added air personalities, it got much better, although there was that disastrous experiment with the female all-talk morning show, and I still disagree with the replacement of Paul Crosswhite with Dave Koz (I especially cannot stand his female sidekick constantly saying "watch your time" ahead of timechecks ... I already have a mother, thank you).

The soft rock oldies that they added to the mix several years back don't quite sound right against the smooth jazz songs. And many previous core artists got dropped around the same time. When was the last time KTWV played a Strunz & Farah track?

Incredibly successful, but I'm not sure about "right".

RE: What's RIGHT with L.A. Radio???

The Wave 94.7, AS IS. It's perfect for Los Angeles. I love it and wouldn't change a thing.

- Every time one leaves the market, one is reminded of just how professional all the stations sound here.

- KROQ is a trend-setter nationwide and somehow manages to stay fresh and "cool" in kids' eyes despite every change in music.

- Indie 103 (even though we're not allowed to talk about it anymore) is one of the hippest stations in the country - the envy of many. We have (in Steve Jones) one of the only midday jocks in a major market who is allowed to do or say anything he wants with no restrictions at all. How many radio fans dream of such a situation across the country?

- This A to Z week on KLOS is fantastic. Very few of the old rockers in big markets have lasted as long as KLOS.

- Vin Scully is the best broadcaster in baseball.

- KBIG's Disco Saturday Night is the perfect accompaniment for driving around before a movie or party. It's almost become a tradition.

- OUR version of Jack is really cool. We get to hear LA-only favorites like Depeche Mode and Oingo Boingo, groups no other cities like too much. Way to go whoever programs that station.

- The Wheel of Fortune AM spot known as 1260 is actually fun to have around - not only to give people something to talk about, but for the sheer novelty. Where else will you get, for any length of time, an all-Beatles or all-show tunes station?

- I absolutely love the song "Think" by Aretha Franklin, but cannot afford to buy the CD. Thank God K-Earth is willing to play it 4 or 5 times a day so that I can enjoy this wonderful tune. I NEVER get tired of it. Thank you, KRTH.

Practically NOTHING!

Right now I'm sitting in a hotel in Providence, RI listening to GREAT radio! Boston and Cape Cod also come in here and it's refreshing to hear a good KISS station (WXKS-FM) and a good AOR and Oldies station and two GOOD AAA stations. They even have a country station here that blows away KZLA!

Not to mention a decent alternative station (WBRU) with a great signal (unlike Indy), a couple of decent hip hop/R&B stations, several very good hot AC stations (which, unlike Star, DON'T suck!), and two great lite rock stations.

Now what they don't have is a jazz station here, and since the WAVE does do a good job there (isn't it ironic that Infinity has both the technically best sounding station (KTWV) and the worst sounding (KROQ and K-Earth) stations in LA?), Los Angeles isn't a total loss. Still, it's ironic that smaller markets have much better radio then Los Angeles these days...
