Whats that new Sophie top40 sound?

One wonders, should they go for the Amp Radio format that's being done on sister KCBS 93.1's HD-2 channel? It's a CHR/Pop targeting teens, I know, people will say we have KHTS for that, but KHTS like sister KIIS leans very Rhythmic nowadays whereas the Amp format is pretty balanced on CHR/Pop music.

Now that we all know that 105.7 is going Oldies can we get over the "Sophie will go Oldies" talk? The new PD is still just that...new...she will get her chance to succeed... Sophie isn't going anywhere for awhile...

You know there are many formats out there that are not being done. One that would be interesting on FM and might get ratings is a Modern Standards station. Basically it would be a more modern version of KPOP. There is an FM in Las Vegas doing it called "The Jewell" and it is very successful. But CBS would be scared of it hurting KyXy. By the way KPOP when it was programmed right (on an AM) was pulling a 3.0 share or better at times, at the end it was getting a 2.0 share and it was being programmed poorly. If CBS did this right they could bring back 103.7's old call letters and call it KJOY again and do modern standards.

While the modern standards can sometimes get some 12+ ratings, it continues to have major challenges to succeed financially.

I'm confused at this assertion that Sophie "sucks." They have some good air talent, and the music mix is fresh and varied, bringing back forward thinking modern AC.

The Jewell station in Las Vegas was originally on a full coverage frequency and often in the top few positions in the ratings. However, due to the age of the listeners, it was only marginally succesful as a business. The format was dropped and picked up by a rimshot FM half way to St. George... it bills considerably less than $1 million a year now, in a market where the leading three (regional Mexican, country and AC) each bill over $9 million. The ratings are below a 2 share and it ranks 30th in market billings.

Simply stated, in markets where profitability depends on selling to ad agencies, stations with most of their audience over 55 will not get business. Standards gets mostly over 65 audience and has no hope at all.

There's a difference between the actual programming "sucking" and an experiment or format simply not working in a given market. My assertion is, Sophie sounds good. Now, it may not be something that can survive or gain enough of a following, but I think the programming isn't the issue in terms of quality. Sadly, you can put on a perfectly good sounding station that for whatever reason just doesn't fly.

Just turn off the transmitter and save the power bill and the band width! sell the bad width to Verizon so our cell phones can start working right
