What's That Sound On 1420 AM?

You may want to tune in 1420 AM if you're anywhere near Stockton today. It may come and go, but...

...KSTN is back on the air, broadcasting via the big old towers at the Ralph Road Radio Ranch. Currently running Power Oldies off of a Mystery Feed originating from greater West Nowhere.

Also at http://www.KSTN1420.com/

Subject, without a doubt, to change.

Soon.

Time for the yearly turn it on or loose the license broadcast.

Not necessarily this time around. The audio that's being heard over the air right now is coming from Wolfman Junior here in my office, but that's just a placeholder for a day (or maybe two) until all the equipment in the Stockton studio is back up to running speed.

The format will change to something other than Power Oldies, perhaps later today, perhaps over the weekend ... perhaps Monday.

The plan, from what I have heard (not first-hand), is that KSTN is coming back on fulltime once again.

With a classic country format. Big flipping deal. They tried to start it at 10 A M this morning, they got three songs in and then went back to power oldies until noon when the new format somewhat kicked in with no real imaging to speak of! What a waste! The music selection Isn't much to speak of.

Update: They are back to playing oldies Saturday morning as they were yesterday afternoon from Wolfman junior's office? lol... Anyone have any info on where this station is heading format wise if they do return to the air fulltime? BossRadioDJ if your the programer behind the music on the Power Oldies internet stream and KSTN goes to a different format will you rename the stream and carry on with it? As a oldies programer you've really got the music dialed in that's for sure! A great mix and flow!

As for the classic country music, perhap's they were dusting off the studio equipment and were playing around with the music a bit?

Perhap's a drive down to the Stockton studio's is the thing to do this week and get an interview with the folks there as to what's going on, and perhap's a peek into what's coming up in the future.

An on again/off again AM station on the far right of the dial in Stockton...

Boy, there really is nothing happening in radio in Central California, is there? :-[

It's Now 4:17 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

1420 AM has been on for the last 30 minutes or so playing Old Country songs along with "Big City
Sounding" DJs and National type commercials. Sounds like a satellite feed for Old Country.

Mostly 70's type Country.

Stange thing: NO station ID or reference to frequency on the dial.

It has popped off the air a few times.

Anyone else hearing this. One of the National spots is Dish TV Network.

Have fun... :D

If this is the best they can do, they may as well just shut it off and go home for another year! Classic Country is not going to do well in Stockton. but then would anything else? mmmmmm Thanks for the Wolfman, BRDJ.....Now back to clapping for the Wolfman.....lol...

Modesto, 30 miles South of Stockton, does Not get the new KSTN 1420 signal very well. It dies at about Ripon which is about
7 to 10 miles North of Modesto. Even 500 watt (daytime) 920 KVIN gets into Stockton much much mucho better than KSTN gets into Modesto. Both 1230 KWG and 1280 (former KJOY) get into Modesto a Whole lot better than KSTN. Both 1230 and 1280 operate non-direction in the daytime with 1K power level and I'm talking daytime signals. 920 KVIN gets into Stockton very good at night with their Nighttime signal at 2.5K.

Looks like KSTN may be back on operating, but not at full power -- Most likely just a fraction of the 5,000 watts daytime.

A correction to yesterday's post: the Country music that they're playing does play from the early 60's into the 90's.
But most of the emphasis is on the 70's and 80's Country Legends.

Have fun. Hee Haw ;D

For those that enjoy the Power Oldies 1420 webstream it's back up again. The Wolfman has left the building, so what is on 1420 the radio station tonight?

I checked it out last night while driving through Stockton and !WOW!... What are they doing to the high-end audio? It has this really weird pre-emphasized sound with a lot of clipping. I can't figure out what could be causing it, but it sounds pretty bad on my truck radio. The little 1340 AM in Jackson sounds way better. Hopefully they figure it out.

Paul, you'd be quite surprised who's listening to the KSTN memorial stream and where. ;)

I love that, Kestrel: "the KSTN memorial stream."

And surprised isn't the word I'd use. I'm stunned. The groovy thing about digital radio is that you get, in "real time," actual listener counts as well as a geographic map of where they are.

KSTN Memorial's audience is substantial, and the reach is vast.

I agree. The KSTN Memorial Stream sounds alot better than what is being played on KSTN right now. And funny thing is that even though it is listed as "Power Oldies 1420" on TunedIn app for my iPhone, it sounds more like KWG-1230 sounded in the 1980's playing "Golden Oldies". The Power Oldies that KSTN played was more like Classic Hits of the 60's, 70's & 80's with a few harder edge Classic Rock tunes. What the KSTN Memorial Tune plays are the traditional oldies I wish more radio stations would play.

I had, some would say, TOO much fun working there....the second time, anyway....:) till about oh, the fall of 1998?

Were they "Power Oldies" then or were they still CHR?
