What's the best quality station in LA right now?

ALL commercial viability, ratings, and business acumen aside, what are the best stations in LA right now, in everyone's humble opinions?

My votes go to:

KCSN
Indie 103
KPCC
KOLA
KMZT

I find it interesting that two of your choices are non-commercial stations, one is a commercial Classical station, and one technically isn't a L.A. market station.

That says a lot (none of it good) about the market, doesn't it?
______________

Perhaps because they have actual live bodies at the controls, speaking with their own voice, in real time, to the audience?

But I can think of at least 10 Spanish stations that do that, none of which is mentioned...

KLVE, KRCD/KRCV, KSCA, KSSE, KLAX, KBUE, KLYY, KHJ, KWIZ, KXOL, etc.

Now I will admit that Rich Caporella (sic) is one of the best announcers in any music genre. But how many times can you listen to "Pictures at an Exhibition" without getting tired of it (see the discussions about KRTH's playlist).

Are we talking Emerson Lake & Palmer or Moussorgsky?.

I'll take ELP please, out of tune synthesizers and all.

Moussorgsky was there first. ELP belongs over at Jack :)

My votes:
KROQ - LA's World Class
KFI - a classic CHR style station with talk in place of pop
KCRW - eternally hip as long as Ruth Seymour remains
KDLD - ultra cool
Bubbling under with a bullet: KRTH
Formerly on the list: George Nicholas' KNX, George Green's KABC, and KIIS during the period when Rick Dees was in his prime

Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)

Edited by david on 02/24/06 07:09 PM.

Do you realize how long ago those call letters changed, and that they actually changed twice?
______________

I knew you would say that before I even clicked on the message, Ed, but I had hoped you would surprise us.

I thought we were talking format quality, not signal strength.

KJLH, being a maximum wattage Class A, is what it is. In my opinion, their programming overcomes the signal limitations, and I think you would agree with that.

KUSC is actually a little bit better, but KMZT gets points because it is a private station that could be sold for so much money. I respect that. I guess that goes against my saying "all business acumen aside," but oh well. KCSN also has excellent classical.

You mean KLOS. And since their playlist is, like everyone, very dull, they only play "Karn Evil 9," (the "Welcome Back my Friends") song.

Either that or it says something about my tastes! :)

Probably a little of both.

Can you say "Clear Channel" without using an expletive?
