I won a NFL Football from Enco Gas (Exxon/Esso) when I was a kid. The U.P.S. man came one dark freezing night with my Football! With that inspiring Football in hand, I always wanted to become a U.P.S. Driver, I was a screwed up kid.

Wow! When you mentioned "Esso", that brought back memories! I had an Esso tanker truck as a little boy.

I won an FM car radio converter from (guess what) an FM station. My father installed it in the family car (I was 12) and I got to hear FM in the car for the first time. It lasted as long as the car too.

I also won $100 when I was 14 and the check arrived on my birthday.

A funny thing I won, was when I was 12, I won tickets to an X-rated movie. A Clockwork Orange. It was violent, not pornographic. My parents used the tickets for a night out.

That's incredible! Yet you are now Disqualified!

A new Car, great prize, and I totally un believe you. You claim to have won it on a local radio contest, however your email to me claims "I won a church raffle! My father took care of the taxes and registration, and then he sold it to a relative of ours. The money went towards my college fund."

I have a funny feeling that you didn't even attend College?

A Westingouse transistor radio from WOWO.
______________
Greetings from Ohio-where the governor wants everyone to know he's sorry.

Back around 1970 or so I won a transistor radio from WOOW and the local Pepsi distributor. It was built to resemble a Pepsi vending machine. It was AM-only,
but surprisingly sensitive for such a little radio. That Pepsi radio was my main reciever for several years and I still have it.

I worked with someone who won a major prize from WFIL. She was the receptionist at an office where I worked. You can bet that she had no other station but WFIL on the radio in the office whenever she was there.

She had won a trip for two to some carribean location in January. WFIL had seen better days by then.

Heck, and it might even be a collectible now! :)

In 1999, I won concert tickets to "Big Stink 4," which was 94-7 NRKs (the former Portland Modern Rock station) summer concert, by being caller number nine.
I would still tell anyone the key to winning a call-in contest is... call in!
______________
If it's the "greatest music ever made," why is it relegated to AM or online only?

Re: That's incredible! Yet you are now Disqualified!

In 1970 I won a 27 inch color tv (and gave it to a girlfriend - not now my wife).

WIND, Chicago went oldies and asked people to send in what they thought were the top 20 songs of all time. I had just gotten my JOEL WHITBURN book, sent the radio station the list from there - and WON!

Back in the early 70's WIXY's Lou King Kirby was broadcasting at the Solon Beef Coral, next to the Beef Coral was a Sohio gas station. I checked the Jackpot winners list and my dad's liceanse plate number was listed. I think we won 5 bucs...does that count?
______________

Another way to win stuff, the Soda Cap

those are the best Stories! Hey remember soda bottle cap contests. You could win good money prying open the layer that indicated your prize. Not like the instant rejection of todays screw open soda caps!

When I was about 8 years old my mom put me on the phone to win a contest on WCAM in Camden NJ. The question was "How many Chief Justices of the Supreme Court have there been?" People were guessing numbers like 60 and 80, which she knew had to be way high...she gave me a number to say, then just as they picked up the phone she changed her mind and went a couple lower. Her second choice turned out to be right. We won free all-you-can-eat smorgasboard dinners at Zaberer's outside Atlantic City, and I stuffed myself with shrimp, which is about as good as it gets at that age.

Years later when I was out of work and living with my parents again I covered my Mother's Day, Father's Day and anniversary gift obligations by winning a pair of Sinatra tickets on WFIL. It was too close to the show date to trust the mail, I didn't have a car and I had to figure out how to take buses from South Jersey to Roxborough to pick up the tickets the next day at the studio on Domino Lane...naturally it was POURING rain but I got there and back in one piece.

I've got three:

(1) TWICE won the infamous WMJI "Cash Bribe Oldie"--$105.00 for knowing the title of, and being the 15th caller when, the Cash Bribe Oldie played. Once from Scott Howitt, and once from Ravenna Miceli.

"With the best listeners money can buy...WMJI," as J.R. Nelson used to intone. What a great contest, and what a great station!

(2) Peter, Paul & Mary tickets, also from WMJI. It was great because the tickets were for a PP&M show in April, but Mary Travers had a cold and wasn't available. So, Peter & Paul played as a duo, AND they gave a rain check for all 3 later in the year. Two shows, for the (free) price of one.

And for what it's worth, as good as PP&M are, I thought P&P were absolutely fantastic!

(3) The Beatles Anthology II (promotional copy 2-CD), and Pulp Fiction VHS--again, from WMJI. Won from Jim Shea, if I remember correctly, on a Saturday afternoon "Beatles Weekend".

People are so used to losing, some don't check them anymore.
when Pepsi did the iTunes contest last winter,I got 4 free songs just by checking caps tossed on the street.

Re: WFIL

I thought WFIL was on City Line Avenue. Transmitter in Roxborough. When did they move?

Sometime between late '76 (when LIN acquired the Roxborough site with their purchase of WPBS, which became WUSL) and early '81, which must have been when I went there. Probably the latter part of that period; I think they were still at City Line when Jim O'Brien left, can't remember what year that was...

Re: WFIL

I moved to Philadelphia in 1977. I think Jim was doing weather on WPVI-ch.6 by then. Was Don Cannon doing AM drive on WFIL then?

For a while Jim was the busiest guy in Philadelphia; morning drive on WFIL immediately followed by Dialing For Dollars at 9 AM down the hall at WPVI plus weather at 6 and 11PM om WPVI. Eventually he cut back to weather and some news anchoring. I was in college out of the area when he gave up radio and I can't remember what year that was--somewhere between '77 and '79--but he had been doing the weather for some time before he left radio.

Don Cannon was Jim's replacement at WFIL and kept the morning drive slot until they made their country move in '81.
