What's the big deal about CC?

Hey, what's the big deal about Power when you have HOT 107? HOT has ratings and last I heard, Power ain't gots none. Take some of the guys from Power like Showcase! And Kenny Dees and put 'em on HOT. Then flip Power to a rock format like NOVA was or something that people will actually listen to. It's all about the dolla dolla bill ya'll. It has nothing to do with color, race, or anything else you may try to spin it as. Just money and listenership. That's all.

I think a lot of people in Syracuse are still angry about the sale of the station from a black owner to CC.

I don't know why people are angry. Both African American owners of stations, Robert Short and Butch Charles, sold their stations to Galaxy and Citadel respectively. No one told them they HAD to.

I thought Merrill (Butch) Charles was the previous owner of Power, which was sold to CC. He has been pretty vocal about the circumstances that caused him to sell.

Big A and Pickle: You’re both right. You see, Butch Charles’ first station was WXCD (105.9), which he sold to what is now Citadel in 1996. He then bought WPCX (106.9) from Great Scott in 1997, changed it to WHCD, and yes, he sold it to Clear Channel in 2000, and they flipped it to “Power.”

I remember a lot of vocal opposition when Robert Short sold his WRDS to Galaxy. There was a feeling in Syracuse’s African American Community that there would never be another African American owner of a Syracuse Radio station in Syracuse, and there was worry about the “white” owned stations serving the African American audience. I was surprised when Clear Channel launched “Power.”

To the original poster here: I don’t think Clear Channel will flip “Power.” One of the reasons they moved it from Auburn to Solvay was so they could serve the Syracuse African American audience with a better and stronger signal.

The Radio Kid, I disagree. I think they will flip Power which is why they moved it so they could get a stronger signal and wider audience. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
