What's the deal with 640 AM?

So now Southwest Oklahoma has been cut off from WWLS now that the powerful 640 signal is droning ESPN. 640 is now licensed to Radio License Holding CBC. Anyone know who that is?

Ownership hasn't changed, it's Cumulus.

It's a real shame. I understand that 98.1's signal gives good coverage in the Oklahoma City metro, but 640's signal is much better when you go south and west of the metro.

I hate to see the WWLS call sign taken away from 640. It's not quite a grievous as taking the KOMA call sign away from 1520, but still sad. KWPN just doesn't sound right as 640's call sign.

Funny story: the sports editor at The Lawton Constitution called to complain and was told by the station Lawton should be able to get 98.1 FM. I guess they never bothered to check the interference from 97.9 FM.

Just more proof corporate owners could care less about the listeners in fringe areas. Perhaps Perry could swing a deal to simulcast WWLS on KXCA 1380.

I'm down in north Texas and have listened to the Animal for over 10 years now. Hate the switch to the national ESPN feed... Hate it. ESPN can be found on plenty of other AM stations or of course via satellite, but there's no other way to get the local Animal talk other than over the air. (I know I could stream it through a phone or something, but that's too much trouble.)

I'm almost surprised they didn't do it the opposite way -- I'd think farmers on their tractors all over the south and west parts of the state would rather hear about OU and other local stuff, while people in the city who might see themselves as more sophisticated would rather hear about the Miami Heat and Lakers and Patriots.

I think they shot themselves in the foot just to keep the ESPN people happy. I think I would have used that 105.3 hairdryer signal for that purpose instead. Messing with the thing that prints money (even though admittedly the lesser half of it) just isn't "bright".
