whats the deal with montgomery?

while traveling down I-85 and switching to I-65 on my way to mobile I obviously passed through montgomery... where the hell is the choice? country...rap...pop...and old rock... no new ROCK. No sports. No talk. all the rap songs played on the pop stations... all the country played on every station... Auburn had choices... good choices.. the tiger rock station or whatever that you could supposedely hear in montgomery didnt pick up... so is the market so limited that you have to be either urban, country, or preteen to enjoy music???

Hey, wake up and smell the ipod. New Rock is one of the worst performing formats in the business. That's why there's no "new" rock station in a lot of markets. Look at the fallout in the last year. Miami, Washington, lots of major markets dumping new, alternative, or mainstream rock formats for Spanish and other opportunities. 18-34 Men are just impossible to sample (arb) and they're also more than likely the first to adopt new technology (ipod etc). Make sense?

I was glad to get back to montgomery... I didn't hear anything in B'ham or Mobile or Atlanta that knocked me off my feet. I think we stack up great.. everything in B'ham, Mobile & Atlanta was Wal-mart, generic, milktoast, music sweeper..jock reads liner.. at least we have some personality on the air..

John, you know I think your great.. but if you read r&r and Fmqb and several other publications you'll get the answers your looking for...

John,

First of all QUIT TYPING IN ALL CAPS- YOU'RE DRIVING ME FREAKIN' NUTS!

Now, I don't have all the answers- that you clearly know. But, I'll try to give you my opinion based on my knowledge from doing this for the last couple of years or so...

Let me see what your questions were.

1)How does SFl Guy know these things?... first of all, he's been doing this for a couple of years as well. You read. You research. You network with other people who do the same. You become a student of this industry.

A lot of people on this board make statements about what would work and what would not work in this market (or anywhere else).... and most of them are done by people who have no real background in this business. BTW, board oping for a Sat night call in show on the 10th ranked radio station in a market does not gain you much experience. It's like saying we had a 60 share of the 5,000 people who were listening at that time. If you (and John I'm not writing that comment to you- cause I know you know the difference) don't understand that concept, then quit reading and immediately leave. Sorry to ramble, but that's been bothering me for quite some time. Most of the people suggesting adding modern rock, etc are doing it becuase that is what they are wanting to hear and are not "programming" to the available audience. John, you know me. You know I have some pretty musical taste. Do you really think that many people would want to listen to a station that I programmed based on what I (or my small circle of friends) like.

2) "WLWI does good". Yes, they did. Let's not forget, WLWI is a good radio station. But, if you dig a little deeper in to the "ratings", you might find things like, their audience is aging. Average age is around 50. What does that say? WBAM's is around 40. Which one would you rather try to sell?

3) "Alice sucked". Politically speaking, this was not the best books for Alice.
But, did you know that 2/3 of all of WXFX's audience does not live in Montgomery County. I can find several advertisers in East Montgomery that are interested in knowing that. (Bet BJ didn't use that in his book break out).
There are other good things I could pull out about Alice- or about WXFX if I wanted. Only using that as an example. Alice- with Greg Budell- is a different station than it was five months ago. John, you should remember how important a morning show is to a radio station? I remember your great numbers and what they did for us on WHHY.

4) "Black stations do good, but don't make any money". Again- this is an uneducated observation. Based on the MK revenue reports for Montgomery, WZHT, WJWZ, and WMCZ are consistenly in the top half of the report. In fact, I'm crying all the way to the bank with ours. It leads our cluster in revenue and was up 96%...say again UP 96%.... in revenue last month. The point you should try to make is that WHLW will have a piss poor Power Ratio (if you odn't know what this is, ask)....probably a .5 at best. What Clear Channel has done is totally swapped around their ratings within their own cluster and will end up with no more money and probably less. If you want to know a format that does not perform well in revenue v ratings it is definately Black Gospel. And, I speak from my experience with the CC Cluster in Birmingham.

John, I hope I have given you answers to your questions. Feel free to ask more.

ha ha skip, so i take it you're gonna run the campaign for me?

first off on my agenda, and i mean this seriously, is end any arguments between myself and terry barber, second is to clear my name of the story of how and why i was fired from clear channel.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.............

i was trained by a great man named al connors, he taught me everything he knew about this business, if it conflicts with what terry was raised on, it's all good, opinions are just one persons idea.

where in the heck in my post about alice did the matter of any conflict between the haigler's and myself come into play? i never mentioned anything in my post about anyone, i have questioned certain things in the past, but everyone has their own questions and in this free country are entitled to ask those questions.

if you're pissed about me asking about alice, that's fine, maybe i should have said WACV-Am which got less ratings now than WQLD had while Al Connors was PD and i was there with him.

i do not take anything on this board seriously and neither should you terry, i've actually been praising your stations more than you think.
______________

Look Jason I've got no beef with you and I am not "pissed" with you. I do appreciate when you do say nice things about our stations... knock yourself out. However, I would stay away from making comments comparing the ratings of an Oldies format 5 years ago (when Oldies had a little more appeal) to that of one today. Someone might want to draw a comparison of how much greater the ratings are today on that station (104.3) than they were back when you were programing it. What a stupid comparison that would be, huh? Guess we should throw in the towel on WACV and start over.

your right, that station is dead, i'm not really implying anything should be changed about what your doing, you got your thing and that's cool that it works, just like john or anyone else, i have my own opinions and thoughts, if it conflicts with you then that's fine.

i have no beef with you either, but if you have no beef with me, then please retract your earlier comments calling me a hack just because i was a board op, because i worked myself as hard as any other on air talent, and what got my fired from my job was a matter that had nothing to do with my job at all it was simply a matter over a former employer that i walked out on when he refused to pay me.

that mess got spread around and twisted, just like in school when you start one thing and blows up in something completly different by the time it gets to the last person in the line.
______________

I just wonder if this person was listening to the following rimshot stations:

WAPR 88.3 (NPR) Selma
WQSI 94.1 (Classic Country) Union Springs
WQNR 99.9 (Classic Rock) Tallassee
WDXX 100.1 (Country) Selma
WAOQ 100.3 (Classic Country) Luverne
WALX 100.9 (Hot AC/Classic Rock) Selma
WBFZ 105.3 (Urban) Selma
WJAM 107.9 (Adult Urban) Orrville/Selma

That last one can be heard at the Wal-Mart store, near Montgomery Mall. I was able to get them, last Tuesday, while visting Montgomery.

RDP <><

P.S. You can also hear talk programming on 1170 and 1410 AM. News from WSFA can be heard on 950 AM.

Re: what the crap??!!

...ya know... my question sort of got answered, but then it seems you all were to busy focused on each others crap that you avoided the original thread... so far this is what I have gotten, the only people listening to the radio in Montgomery are either old bikers, rednecks, and urban wannabe's. Theres no market for New Rock... Interesting, what are the station standings... 101.5 out of mobile seems to be doing great. The Auburn station seemed ok. There was a Hot Topic in the mall, but I guess since there is no market they are shutting down. I also see were Star 98.9 has changed formats twice in 5 years, where as 101.5 is still pumpin out the same head banging rock. Interesting isn't it how the more pine trees you see on the side of the road, the less music variety you get. I guess pine pollen = ignorance. Thank god for atlanta variety.

Re: what the crap??!!

I live here.
I like it.
I don't care what you think.
I think atlanta radio is not as good as montgomery.
I haven't heard anything in mobile i liked.
I don't like b'ham radio, it is weak.
I know someone at montgomery mall that told me hot topic is about to fold.
I know that new rock doesn't make any real money.
I know that fox is the number one station for men. 104 didn't beat us.
I know that tiger really didn't have any numbers in montgomery.
I hate that because i like the station, i helped put it on the air.
thank you

HEY DAVENPORT,WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE HAGLERS NOT THE HAIGLERS?

Re: what the crap??!!

> Thank god for atlanta variety.

Where the top-rated stations are ... Urban, N/T, Gospel, Country, and Spanish.

Or, in other words, what's being listened to is much the same stuff you're griping about.

Re: what the crap??!!

> > Middlega, have you ever tried radio sales? The young demo is hard enough to sell and in a city the size on Montgomery, one would starve trying to sell "New Rock". Now that the beer companies won't buy radio stations whose audience is 30% under 21, that would take a big part of the advertising dollars away. Why don't you call the Tiger in Auburn and ask their sales manager how many businesses besides bars and beers by the station. Since Auburn/Opelika isn't a rated market, they don't have to abide by the 70/30 rule. I'm sure that Tiger's Triple A sister station generates the most advertising revenue of the two. If New Rock would work in Montgomery, don't you think that somebody would have done it by now?

Thank god for atlanta variety.
